Who is the second best hindi movie villian character?

Agreed, nobody can beat Gabbar Singh. Sholay was Gabbar Singh and Gabbar Singh was Sholay... he gets the top-slot pedestal. But who can be rated the second-best... who gets the silver medal? Let's discuss and then, maybe, the admin can add a poll to this thread, with a few choices listed from the posts.

And please, no caricatures. You ask who? I mean, cartoon villians... viz. Mogambo... that takla villian from Shaan... that stuttering fool from Darr... etc. A villian has to be villianish through and through, brave, vicious, complete kameena. Here's my list,

1. Jageera from China Gate (was watching this movie... bad video casette, got to download a good print... his character is what inspired this thread).

2. Ajay Devgan's character from Deewanapan

3. Ajit's character from Kottey Sikkey

Any others?

Pran in an old Dileep "Paki-loving" Kumara (double role) film ... I cant remember the name. Make Pran the best and Gabbar role in Sholay for 2nd spot?

Pran as an actor may be good... but his villiany is not the cream of all roles. He was typically just interested in the herione... or beating up the hero... or selling some jewelry. He never had a role where he created a reign of terror... mass havoc. So, Pran can be dropped... unless you can suggest a specific such role.

Btw, the movie you mention... is it Ram aur Shyam? If so, his role is just whipping a weakling twin-brother... nothing worth mentioning... especially when compared with Gabbar Singh.

The nomination for Gabbar is not fair. I mean in Hindi films we have the pre-Sholay era and the post-Sholay era. So yes, Gabbar Singh was the best for the post-Sholay era.

So you should be asking for pre-Sholay and post-Sholay villains.

I would vote for Ajit for his role in Zanjeer in the pre-Sholay era.

Post Sholay, I would vote for ... there are just too many, but Gulshan Grover when he is not playing the stupid 'baad maaan' type villain.

There is a bit more to it than that

Bollywood Villainy can be categorized as follows:

1) Appropriation of objects/persons of desire...like woman, land, jewelry etc. with no regards to existing norms of the society. The villainy is not intended towards society at large...this was mostly the villainy of the pre-Gabbar era and until early 80s.

2) Trafficking/Smuggling in diamonds, gold, women, alchohol, and drugs. In order to fund this, usually Chambal type dacoity or bank robbery is used.

3) The categories 1 and 2 as side business to fund terrorism.

4) Corrupt government officials who are usually side kicks to main villains in category 1, 2 and 3.

In category 1, jury is tied on Pran vs Prem Chopra. The bronze medal definitely goes to Manmohan (villain in Aradhana) for his specialty in lust based entertaining villainy...The runner up being Madan Puri, Jeevan, Anwar, Jayant, etc.

In category 2, the Amjad Khan definitely is a gold medalist, with silver medal to Amrish Puri, and bronze to Kadar Khan. The runner ups being Shakti Kapoor, Ranjeet, Gulshan Grover etc.

In category 3, the jury is tied on Amrish Puri vs Danny Denzongpa,, followed by Mukesh Rishi for the second place, and the bronze medalist being Gulshan Grover. The runner ups include Ashish Vidyarthi, Irfan Khan, Aditya Pancholi, Anupam Kher etc.

In category 4, Om Shiv Puri and Paresh Rawal tie, Shakti Kapoor comes in second, and Sadashiv Amrapurkar as third. Then there are Mohan Joshi, Pramod Moutho, Irfan Khan etc.

Re: Who is the second best hindi movie villian character?

second best in what way?
Acting wise, or more feared in the movie?

Amrish Puri was amazing in negative roles.
His character from Mr. India would be my pick

Most of Amrish Puri's memorable roles are that of terrorist like Mogambo, or some Paki guy who desires to break India to pieces.... whereas Amjad Khan has been more of a Randi-baazi, smuggling type guy...with exception of his role in Sholay and a couple of other pics

Kadar Khan is one of the most under-appreciated actors in Bollywood....He does comedy, villainy and occasionally senti roles with such a finesse that it becomes unbelievable that he was also a dastardly villain in some other movie...the only other actors I know of that can do the same are Paresh Rawal and Om Puri

I forgot Ajeet....one of the more unlucky guys in Bollywood who started as a hero in B grade movies and did well as a villain....but not enough roles to earn a medal in any category
