cha pai what's the reason for your No to club soda? i think club soda and whiskey is very common combination..prolly more popular than water..only reason that i know why some like water is because it retains whiskey's taste and texture (makes it milder but does not change it) whereas soda changes it to crispy..

It's a drink you sip not gulp. Try single malt with little ice and just keep sipping. Good Times . Soda dilutes the taste and makes it chugging drink like Rum and Coke.

dirty, i have tried to have it on the rocks before but then i had to take it really slow otherwise i'd end up drinking too much..dusara, by now i am used to the fuzzy crispy taste with soda so much that i find on the rocks too strong...

i haven't ever tried single malt though...may be i'll give it a try this weekend..

Re: Scotch Drinkers

Although in the puritanical sense, Scotch Whiskey is to be best enjoyed on the Rocks. But IMHO, it is perfectly acceptable to add some water (preferably Evian - no chlorinated water please!). Even adding some Club Soda is not a faux-pas in my book. But no Soda-Pop PLEASE!

Btw, Glenfiddich is my Libation of choice

Re: Scotch Drinkers

For me good whiskey is best taken neat, but cold (to avoid ice). I refrigerate the bottle for 2-3 hours. Adding water makes it flat (so ice is avoidable). If necessary to dilute (depending on the company), I use chilled soda, but that's strictly second choice.

Dirty, I'm glad you discovered the superiority of single malt as compared to blended. I am no longer familiar with the various brands, but look for something that says "smokey malt" (i.e. matured in casks made of smoked oak trunks) and more than 10 years old.

Black Label and Chivas Regal are both blended scotch whiskeys - i.e. they are not produced from the same single malt or batch. A mixture of malts is used from different batches.

I would recommend you start with Glenfiddich as a starter single malt. You will enjoy it. Its very smooth, the buzz is also smooth and it goes down also very smooth. Next morning no hangovers, no issues.

If you want to taste every small nuance, feel it all over your tongue and palate, then no additives - not even water. Just have it as is, taking small sips and swirling them over your toungue. You can feel the flavour just invade your senses. Its fantastic.

To chill the nectar you can use a couple of ice cubes, but thats about it.

Club soda is the next best choice.

Anything else and you are better off drinking Mosambi or Super Cafe.

In engg college we could not afford even ACP and DSP so many times we would have desi daru The way to have government made 'Super Cafe' brand, you take some salt on your palm. Then have a small glass with a little limca or gold spot. Mix the drink. And drink it fatafaat.. and then lick the salt .. .Total bewda times man!! Amazing ... You get the kick so fast and your whole mouth stinks and you stink so bad!! But its a totally fun experience.

We used to have desi daru when we used to go for rock concerts or college festivals as there would be many of us and very little money to get drunk on Old Monk. So at such times 'Nautaak Nautaak.. Gheun Tak Gheun Tak'

Yeah.. some vodkas and russian drinks are also drunk that way.. in what they call "shot" glass, a pinch of salt etc.. and feel the fire gliding down your throat right down to the stomach.

Even some of those "narangi" drinks cause a lot of fire, though they look like gold spot

Vat69 is regular scotch, 5 years old.. 37% proof I think. It's ok. Attractive bottle that's why it was used so often in the old movies.

Bagpiper is ok, if nothing else is available. McDowell No. 1 is strictly nono for me.

In hostels, Royal Stag was the most common one, Royal Challenge when someone used to feel rich. Never liked RS. Later started 100 pipers in some seniors' company... nice, smooth...but I was never sold to whisky/scotch. always liked Vodka/white rum. Now it is red wine. heady and gives nice sleep.

Re: Scotch Drinkers

I have had 1 question many times.
These drinks are matured over many many years. A typical average Glenfiddich is matured 12 years. If I am in manufacturing scotch business then, it means I have to predict what will be the consumption like after 12 years and accordingly process the liquor! Given the rate at which population and consumption has increased, I reckon it would have been very difficult to predict that this would be the demand in - say 90s or such and such year? Would people have had the forecasting abilities? If not, then in some of the bottles atleast, are we given duplicates/mix?

Re: Scotch Drinkers

it is also amazing how much of an automation has the manufacturing process seen. I visited one of the distilleries producing 2 million litres of alcohol a year has a staff of

12 people (8 workers + managers + Admin + HR)!
