Ashdoc's movie review---October

Varun Dhawan plays Dan , which is short for Danish Walia . He is doing internship for getting a diploma in hotel management in a five star hotel in Indian capital city Delhi . He is hot tempered and somewhat rude and over talkative , even with his superiors . In short , he is different . And that difference makes a lot of difference in his attitude to what happens next....

At a party in which his peers are drinking together , one of his female class mates named Shiuli ( Banita Sandhu ) sits on a balcony and falls down thirty feet after losing her balance . She is so badly injured that even if she recovers she won't ever be walking again . And even recovery is doubtful . But Dan is told that she was asking for him just before she fell , and something snaps in his mind ; he begins to go daily to the hospital in which Shiuli is admitted and begins to help her family in taking care of her .

Actually Shiuli was not Dan's girlfriend or even his friend . She was just a colleague . Yet why does Dan get so involved with her hospitalisation ? The director never tells us the answer and we are left wondering in till the end....the only explanation is that Dan is different .

But astonishingly , an emotional bond is created between Dan and Shiuli due to his taking care of her . It is not expressed through words because Shiuli never recovers enough to speak a full sentence . Rather it is expressed through eyes and tears . Somewhere there is a hint of love....and that's what a person goes to a movie in search of doesn't he ? At least I do .

Meanwhile Dan has become an indispensable part of Shiuli's family as they struggle to take care of her . They never ask as to why he is doing what he is doing , but others do . His mother and his other colleagues are questioning his motives for helping out Shiuli's family , but soon begin to co operate with him seeing the sheer intensity of his commitment to helping Shiuli recover .

But Dan has not been regular to training in the hotel , and his superiors are questioning his commitment to his work . Soon he is kicked out from training . His immediate superior in whose bad books Dan had always been , has now developed a respect for Dan's devotion to Shiuli and gets him a job in another town . But Shiuli shows a severe reaction to his departure and he has to quit his job and come back .

Much of the movie shows the hospital atmosphere and is not easy to watch a patient lying in hospital . But as the movie progresses we become more used to the proceedings and watch with increasing empathy as Dan takes care of Shiuli .

Shiuli means night jasmine flowers , which are a favourite of Shiuli . She used to collect them from childhood , and Dan had seen her collect them in the hotel gardens . He collects and keeps them near Shiuli in her early stages in hospital in hope that she would wake up on smelling their fragrance . These flowers blossom in October , and that is why the movie has got the name .

Finally Shiuli passes away leaving Dan free to lead his life . The same hotel that had removed him takes him back for training probably out of sheer respect for the care and devotion he showed for Shiuli , though why he was taken back is not expressly shown . Like much of the movie , what is happening is left unspoken....

This decidedly an offbeat film that won't appeal to the regular Bollywood film buff , and aficionados of masala movies are advised to stay away from it . But for an off beat film lover , the movie grows on you . You begin to slowly like it and it makes an emotional impact only later . I am one of them....

Background music is decent and colours and photography are decent . Acting is good by everyone , including Shiuli's mother played by Geetanjali Rao .

Verdict---Decent .

Three stars out of five .

He is a misfit for hotel management.

Wont happen in real life - never mind, it is a movie. Looks like the story is written by a woman.

I thought it was after the October revolution, to which all the left wing film makers would be attached to.

That is a loose plot.

Good advice. I wont like it. Not my kind of a movie. Your lady fans would like it.

I am sure you meant unlucky. Divya Bharati was lucky she quit this life immediately... unlike the protagonist in this movie, who lies in a bed for a long period of time before quitting.

Do update here when you find out which hospital the producers and investors of this film are admitted to after a week of its release

Aisa chewtiya film banake kya mila? Its not even a proper art film going by the story.

Very low budget movie going by the story. Won't suffer losses probably.

Re: Ashdoc's movie review---October

here is a review from a person who writes for forums like me

Shoorjit Sircar who has given us an array of wonderful movies like Pink, Piku, Madras Café, Vicky Donor etc is the Director of October and this movie too is a classic movie. Shoorjit has definitely breathed life in each and every scene of October…

What really mesmerized me was seeing Varun’s acting….the guy whom we have seen always bubbly and naughty – he does have an another version too…. Yes, this movie showcases a very different version of Varun…I think this is one of the finest performance of Varun…Debutant Banita (Shiuli) looks pretty, expressive emotions… And voila, the name Shiuli also grabbed attention…a different name! It means Night Jasmine ! Also hatsoff to the lady who had done the role of Shiuli’s mother (Gitanjali)..another class actor!

The movie is all about a hotel management studen Varun Dhawan (Dan) working as an intern….and one of his colleague (Shiuli) suddenly lands up at hospital and is in coma. Thereafter there are lots of twists and turns.. Varun doesn’t speak in volumes, but yea very straight forward and blunt…the Devdas look of Varun – uff he has carried it so well!

Not all may like, but someone who has a heart that cares and understands will surely fall in love with the movie. No much drama, no much romance, no aaaltu faaltu dialogues ….more of love….someone may even feel its your story! At times, you may forget that you are watching a movie; instead, you become a spectator to the lives of real people with real and uncorrupted emotions. What needs applause here is there is a scene at the hospital between Dan and Shiuli, where they acknowledge their relationship in their own indescribable way….hats off to Juhi for skilfully writing and well-enacted by the artists….

I loved the background score as well, done by Shantanu Moitra – it really blends very well adding mood to the movie… The movie is a bit slow which is the only factor one might feel boring (but not all who really can connect to the movie).

With a heart that craves for love do see this movie! Worth a watch.. I feel lost when I think that people go to watch all bullshit movies of the khan family (pardon me all khan lovers) ..why cant they shed few pennies to watch the movies that are classic! One really need to be very patient and understand the movie…once you do that, the movie gets connected to ur heart….and then there is no need to use ur mind….your heart itself will flow with the tale…..

For me, should be nominated for Oscars….

In short, a movie with deep meaning of immortal ... unconditional love….less of words and more of emotions…..

Rating : 3.8/5

Re: Ashdoc's movie review---October

here is another review from a person writes for forums

Love is one emotion that brings out the human in us. It is a feeling which makes us do things which normally scares us. it is the most selfish and selfless emotion at the same time. 'October' movie is about love and how it helps to grow as a person. It takes us through the story of Dan, a rebellious hotel management trainee played by Varun Dhawan. Rebellious, irresponsible life of Dan takes a turn when one of his co-workers is met with an accident. Rest of the movie is how he reacts to it and how it shapes him. From another perspective, it is a movie about a family's journey when one of their own met with a serious accident.

The movie moves at an absorbing pace which gives us ample time to assimilate the situation and its emotion. The cinematography blended in with writing from word go which helps to bring a new dimension to the movie. usage of seasons adds depth to the emotional journey and also provided us with some moments of beauty on screen. BGM was mostly soothing and sober and went along with the nerve-wrenching sound effects in the hospital scenes.

The acting was subtle and realistic. It was a pleasure to see Varun Dhawan playing nuances of Dan with a lot of subtlety. The girl who played shiuli, had a face which is going to stay with us for a long period of time. Gitanjali Rao who played shiuli's mother came up with one of the memorable performances in recent times.

All in all, October is a movie which takes through the emotions of few people when they are met with a situation and how it shapes them to move forward in their lives. Shoojit sarcar's executed his vision to perfection and brings out the best from his technical team. It is refreshing to see a Hindi film with depth and about real human emotions. You don't want to miss it if you like to experience a realistic, emotional cinematic journey.

Rating - 3.5/5

Lot of such women have lots of money and they make crappy films...

Example - Manisha Koirala made a lot of money acting in regular Bollywood films. I forget the name of the movie she produced and I think directed too. Oh what a boat load of crap that was!! You gotta see it to believe it!!

ashdoc, I though you are reviewing for us mere laymen. But if you are becoming like those self-anointed critics, then its sad for us folks. Saala, I used to look forward to your reviews because you were unbiased and did not write in favour of the movie after having received money from producer or editor of the paper. Now you are trying to be like the sell-out reviewers!

Anyway, I hope you will write honest reviews. Being honest can also get you lot of fame and maybe money - Just go to youtube and search for Honest Trailers'... you will get the point I am making

That's not true. I genuinely liked the movie. I have lately developed a taste for off beat films, and have an entire thread dedicated to them on echarcha.
