Tax ID / Aadhar Card for Overseas Citizens of India (OCI)

Is there some sort of national ID that an OCI can use to have bank accounts or make investments in the motherland? I am travelling back after a long time and would like to complete any paperwork etc beforehand. I have heard of the Aadhar card and the PAN card -- which one is suitable for an OCI? Are there any other tax ID numbers prevalent in India?

Thanks for your help.

Better to take every document you possess, more is less when it comes to Indian govt doc processing.

Aadhar card is what is being asked these days. After applying for it, it took us 5 weeks to get the card. If you dont have that much time, maybe the bank can accept the Aadhar card receipt with the clause that you will submit Aadhar card as soon as you receive it?

Re: Tax ID / Aadhar Card for Overseas Citizens of India (OCI)

Adhar is only valid for residents in India. NRI's are not eligible for Aadhar. so banks should not be asking for it if you show your OCI card....

however, not all officials are on the same page about it. Some twats might still refuse to do anything until you show the adhar card. or if you dont want to advertise your citizenship then there is nothing you can do without adhar now.

If you are looking to open a new bank account where you deposit money in INR and withdraw money in INR, then I recommend opening an NRO account with ICICI bank that you can do without visiting India. If you already have an NRE account with them then you will not even need to supply majority of documents.

You can use NRO account to make investments, its more or less same as a savings bank account - only difference is that NRO is for non residents.

K4, no, the banks are not OK with just the submission of OCI. At least SBI and Standard Chartered arent.
