Dumb: Stealing a laptop. Dumber: Stealing a broken laptop. Dumbest: Calling tech supp

It had to be the dumbest customer-service call ever.

Lancaster County, Neb., sheriff's deputies say a man couldn't get a stolen laptop computer to work so he called the manufacturer's toll-free tech-support number for help.

The IBM ThinkPad was reported missing after a rural home burglary Sept. 13, but there were few leads until IBM called, reports the Lincoln (Neb.) Journal-Star.

It turned out someone who wasn't the registered owner had failed in booting up the machine and called IBM's customer-service line, which still handles the calls although IBM sold its personal-computer division to China's Lenovo earlier this year.

When the caller gave the machine's serial number, support personnel realized it had been stolen and notified the authorities.

On Sept. 29, deputies executing a search warrant on a Lincoln home found both the ThinkPad and a pistol that had been stolen in Omaha in 1989.

They arrested Darrell Brown, 48, on suspicion of possessing stolen property.

Q:Who is the knucklehead of the week? I think all 3 deserve the crown.

A : A man in South Carolina has been charged with burglary after police found him hanging NAKED from the ceiling of a store. He told police someone threw his keys on the roof and he was trying to get them. As for why he was naked, police think he took his clothes off so he could fit through an air vent.

B : Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty will be remembering this slip of the tongue for awhile. At the Minnesota Wild's home opener, the governor was SUPPOSED to say, "It's time to drop the puck." Unfortunately for him, he tripped over the last word, and something similar came out instead.

C : If you're trying to transport illegal drugs, you probably should make sure the tags on your car are up to date. Orlando police found 550 pounds of marijuana in a man's SUV, after they pulled him over for expired tags.

Below is another botched crime. This one's from Aamchi Mumbai...

Call up victim's brother for ransom from a mobile phone, making it easy for cops to trace them.

Four men out to make a quick buck by abducting a paan vendor got caught because they used a cell phone to call up the victim's brother on his cell phone for ransom.

According to police officials at Kurla railway station, paan vendor Govind Sahu was travelling to Ghatkopar by a local train on October 3 when he met Anand Behera, a paan vendor from his native Orissa, around 3:00 pm. Behera was accompanied by Hrithik Maiti, Pranil Rane and Prem Nepali.

The four told Sahu that some girl in Thane was making allegations against him and it would be better if he accompanied them and cleared the air with the girl's father who was reportedly upset.

This ensured Sahu did not create a ruckus when they prevented him from alighting at Ghatkopar.

Instead, they told him to alight at Bhandup and took him to Tulsipada hills where they confined him to a small hut.

So far, everything went according to plan. Then the kidnappers made their first mistake.

The kidnappers then called Sahu's brother Gopal on his mobile phone from a mobile phone they were using which indicated that they were pretty raw crooks. They demanded Rs 35,000 for Govind's release, said M D Pawar, senior police inspector, Kurla railway police.

A police team accompanied Gopal to the place where the first installment of Rs 10,000 was to be handed over to the kidnappers.

Behera and Maiti arrived to collect the cash. The police team lost no time in arresting them on charges of kidnapping and extortion, said Pawar.

The drama started on October 3 and by October 5 it was all over for the crooks except for Rane and Nepali who are still at large. The cops are confident that it won't be long before the duo too find themselves behind bars.

Behera had hatched the plot because he was in need of money. He is from the same village in Orissa as Sahu. He persuaded the three others to be his accomplices by promising each Rs 5000, said Pawar.

Incidentally, this was the first extortion case the Kurla railway cops handled.
