Alexa, robots are stupid

Have any of you guys bought into the smart devices/smart homes things quite popular nowadays? what do you think about it?

I am thinking about a google home mini - the smallest and the lowest budget. Not too sure though... will it just be a 5 day novelty to ask google to read me news or play me songs (which need other subscription services) or get smart lights/thermistat etc etc or does it get reallly used?
