Yes, sanitation is a very important part of healthcare. Waste management is big business.

Re: PM Modi outlines priorities, tells ministers to focus on governance

Now we are all experienced professionals, when we join a new job we quickly acclimatize by learning about the processes, systems, people, etc and start digging into what all was going on before you got there, who worked there and what work they did, what is pending, etc. It takes every professional a bit of time to warm up and start delivering, if one has a mature manager/boss they allow you a bit of time to settle in and start making an impact.

Similarly, and a bit differently, a new Govt has good idea of the work that happened, but also they need to deep dive into files, etc and understand closely how they can continue the good work, and where required turn things around. Modi and his govt will have to work with the same energy they showed during campaigning, and keep focus on their agenda, not make the mistakes and be complacent like Rajiv Gandhi when he too got a mammoth mandate in 1984.

Shashi Taroor does not like Modi's 10 point agenda.

yes - but the courts also need to expand and judge quickly. 'Fauzdari cases' are the slowest noving in the courts
3. Remove all kinds of reservations. Allow each university to design their own quota system.
On the lines with my points - guaranteed to invite bandhs and lose elections but better in long run.
4. Focus on Urban planning

Our babus are brilliant in planning. it is execution that is lacking. This is where actually Modi's 'decisive image' comes. So far, he seems to be living up to his image, but still early days.

He is in news now for praising Modi ("pleasantly surprised" as he says). THe original Chamcha (MS Aiyar - he predates Digvijay Singh by some 10 years) is now vocal against this.

The deal in COng seems to be this. "Criticize Rahul and get kicked out Then there is no more anti defection law for you."

Re: PM Modi outlines priorities, tells ministers to focus on governance

Tharoor has held Congi views for way too long and has served under govt .. don't think he'd do a complete flip flop especially since he has written books and given lectures based on all this.

Actually all these headmasterish instructions etc. remind me of Gujarat 2002 (after the elections). He issued similar instructions at that time. At the end of 10 years, the result was that the Vidhan Sabha hardly convened, except for the minimum legal requirements and with the minimum to make the quorum.

Lok Sabha is a different ball game. There are many heavyweights in the party in Delhi. But if the results are good, all this headmastergiri may be worthwhile.
In case of Indira Gandhi too, the cabinet, CMs, etc. were for namesake. There was a kitchen cabinet which used to actually run the country. But the results then were not much to talk about.

Re: PM Modi outlines priorities, tells ministers to focus on governance

Now, one thing i would commend is the decision to visit Bhutan first.
Shows 2 things -
1. Even small neighbours need to be acknowledged. ABV was obsessed with Pakistan. The next trip should be to Nepal.
2. It sends a message to China without pushing it too far. Bhutan has a troubled relationship with China.

Re: PM Modi outlines priorities, tells ministers to focus on governance

I saw some gora expert on foreign policy comment that India has punched far below its weight in the international world for way too long.. He said India needs to come up and present a bolder image with strong stands on issues. A resurgent India is important for the world.

Re: PM Modi outlines priorities, tells ministers to focus on governance

Now that every one is advising PM Modi, here is one from a Sahukar turned Cyber Muqaddam. link to advise

Couple of paras

Conventional wisdom is that the new government should focus on reducing the fiscal deficit. This writer would like to take a contrarian view. Ronald Reagan ignored the deficit hawks . He went for bold tax cuts and increased fiscal deficits. Reagan’s gamble paid off. The American economy acquired vigour. Growth became the new story, albeit with a time lag. At the end of four years, Reagan was re-elected. The Modi government should perhaps imitate the Reagan administration.
The thing to remember is that voters are swayed by inflation and growth in the period just before an election. The new government should focus not on inflationary risks now, but on the likely inflation and growth rates five years from now. Taking risks in the first couple of years may turn out to be worthwhile as a solid growth engine for the economy is set in motion.

Re: PM Modi outlines priorities, tells ministers to focus on governance

Saw his speech in the Parliament today. A lot of things were very high level, but i dont remember anyone speaking so impressively (except may be Indira Gandhi). ABV gave too many pauses. Others are not even worth comparing.

Of course, Lok Sabha is a different ball game. BJP will have to do some Houdini trick to switch off the LS and RS TV, as they did with the Vidhan Sabha TV in Gujarat
