Exclamation Heavy rains! Mumbai flooded as usual

Heavy rains! Mumbai flooded as usual

Heavy to very heavy rains are likely to lash Mumbai and its neighbouring areas. The rainfall has caused traffic snarls as many roads and streets in the metropolis were flooded and people were seen wading through knee-deep water. Many trains are either cancelled or running late.

Re: Heavy rains! Mumbai flooded as usual

Only so much can be done with Mumbai's reclaimed low lying land, sometimes the high tide coincides with the heavy rains to make matter worse. The important question is, has enough been done to do what can be done, like storm drains, some pumping of water, etc. If this is done one has to live with the issues, if not then we have administration to blame.

I believe Shiv Sena has held the BMC for decades now, and have perfected a system of gundagardi and hafta system, with mohalla pramukhs and corporators making sure nothing gets done without their cut. This bigshot Gujju I know, couldn't add a couple rooms to his house (yes, he has a house in prime area of Mumbai) .. until he had paid negotiated rate of 3 lakhs.. only then was material allowed to come in for construction. This family plays in 100s of crores, yet they were helpless before the gundas of Shiv Sena.

Methinks the problems occur due to 2 things.
1. There is a river which is meant to drain water from Mumbai, Mithi. But it is blocked by all the dumping and illegal encroachment.

2. There are stormwater drains meant to drain stormwater. They are there in all the indian cities. The pictures below tell all.

One in a developed country looks like this.

and this is how it looks in Mumbai.

The color of Mumbai local trains have changed or what? What happened to the good old reddish brown on bottom half and yellow on top half?

One guaranteed holiday every year due to rains. Does that still happen in Mumbai? Kids must be enjoying.
