Beijing ticks off Trump: Don't provoke us on 'One China' policy or we will support your enemies militarily, state media says

Beijing ticks off Trump: Don't provoke us on 'One China' policy

or we will support your enemies militarily, state media says
NEW DELHI: After US President-elect Donald Trump+ questioned the 'One China' policy, Beijing used its state media to warn him that if he throws his weight behind Taiwan or uses the issue to bargain on trade, "Beijing could offer support, even military assistance to US foes."

"If Trump gave up the One China policy, publicly supported Taiwan independence and wantonly sold weapons to Taiwan, China would have no grounds to partner with Washington on international affairs and contain forces hostile to the US," said an editorial today in the Global Times, a newspaper associated with the Communist party of China, and one that reportedly speaks for Beijing on foreign policy issues.

In addition, Trump is "naive to think he can use the One China policy as a bargaining chip to win economic benefits" from China, state media added.

The editorial came hours after Trump, in an interview with Fox News last night, asked why the US needs to be bound by the 'One China' policy. " I don't know why we have to be bound by a 'one China policy'+ unless we make a deal with China having to do with other things, including trade," Trump said in the interview with Fox News.

The editorial slammed what it called Trump's businessman way of thinking.

"The One China policy is not for selling. Trump thinks that everything can be valued and, as long as his leverage is strong enough, he can sell or buy. If a price can be put on the US Constitution, will the American people sell their country's constitution and implement the political systems of Saudi Arabia or Singapore?," the editorial asked.

The US has supported the 'One China' policy since 1979 when it broke off ties with Taiwan, which calls itself Republic of China (ROC). By doing so, the US and acknowledged there is just 'one' China, and also acknowledged that Taiwan is a part of mainland China. In 1949, Chinese Communist Party forces defeated the Government of the Republic of China - in the Chinese Civil War - and founded the People's Republic of China, eliminating ROC authority from mainland China.

Almost four decades of Sino -US diplomacy came almost crashing down after Trump took a congratulatory phone call from Taiwan President+ Tsai Ing-wen. This was the first such contact with Taiwan by a US president-elect or president since 1979, Reuters wrote.

Some Chinese analysts cautiously attributed Trump's latest comments on 'One China' to his being an "immature" politician+ and being "manipulated" by conservatives in the US.

"Diplomatically, Trump is still immature, so we need to point out to him how serious the problem is and exert pressure on him. We should make him understand the importance and complexity of Sino-US ties and prevent him from being manipulated by some conservative forces," said Li Haidong, professor of China Foreign Affairs University, to Global Times.

The editorial also cautions "modesty."

"Trump needs to learn to handle foreign affairs modestly, especially the China-US relationship. More importantly, a hard struggle against Trump is needed to let him know that China and other world powers cannot be easily taken advantage of," the editorial said.

Not just that, the issue of Taiwan is non-negotiable, Beijing has long believed.

"As a businessman, he thinks it's quite normal to do business, but he hasn't realized that the Taiwan question is not a business to China. The Taiwan question is not negotiable," said Li.

In the Fox interview, Trump reiterated that China "was not cooperating with America" on its handling of its currency, on North Korea and on tensions in the South China Sea, where he said China is building "a massive fortress." "I don't want China dictating to me," Trump said, as he time and again defended his call with the Taiwanese leader.

Global Times's editorial says that it is in fact the 'One China' policy that has maintained peace in the region.
"The One China policy has maintained peace and prosperity in Taiwan, and, if abandoned, cross-Straits ties would see a real storm. China would introduce a series of new Taiwan polices, and may not prioritize peaceful reunification over a military takeover if Trump insisted on his provocations," the editorial said.

There was a warning there for Taiwan too,
"Eventually, those who advocate Taiwan independence will tremble. Taiwanese authorities may regret to being a pawn of Trump and his radical policies. And Tsai will refuse to answer Trump's call some day. Nothing is impossible if the Trump administration goes too far," warned the Chinese editorial.
There are four kinds of people to avoid in the world: the assholes, the asswipes, the ass-kissers, and those that just will shit all over you.
