A query about HIV

I think many people know about incidences that people prick unsuspecting guys with needles which are HIV infected ...

Is this an urban Legend or is this a fact ... That means that HIV virus can be air borne isnt it ...

And how does tranfer thro' a needle makes you conclude that HIV can be transmitted thro' air???

As far as I know, it can't be transmitted thro' air.

Thats wat my question is .. if the virus cannot survive outside the human body how can a needle infect another person .. unless and until there is body fluid contact

i am no expert on this but i think that the virus can survive in fluids like blood, semen, etc for some time. infected blood can be transfused into a person months after it is collected and correctly stored.

so it is the infected blood on the needle which gets transmitted with the drug into the users blood stream that infects the needle sharer rather than the needle itself.

i don't think the virus is airborne.

The needle can have minute traces of human blood or other bodily fluids. The virus can survive in these fluids. So if a needle has some blood or other fluid which is HIV infected then this fluid can enter your body when needle is pricked. And you get HIV

Although HIV infection happening by just a prick of needle is a hoax, Never think that HIV or any virus for that matter cannot survive in air or for a long time. Although HIV may not be active without body fluids, the virus itself might not be "dead"

Why?

First what are virus.

Essentially, that is the border of living vs non living. On the one hand, if they're floating around in the air or sitting on a doorknob, they're inert. They're about as alive as your keyboard. But if they come into contact with a suitable host, they get themselvs busy and take over the cells of that host.

How do the infect.
Virus cannot reproduce.. what it has is just a DNA/RNA molecule and a shell of protein. Thats about it. What it has is just a recepie for itself. It just injects the genetic material into the host cell and mixes it with the hosts DNA. Then every cell the host cell creates will have that DNA.. thats how it reproduces.

Antibiotics cannot kill viruses. Some say the only way to kill a virus is to deny it the protein/enzymes it will need to become full blown virus (covering itself with it "capsid"). (These are the ones with DNA). The ones with just RNA have even complicated mechanisms

Point to note are DNA/RNA can survive for thousands of years (as mitochondiral DNA can be recovered from bones of even egyptian mummies which have been buried thousands of years ago).

This DNA/RNA is the basic building blocks of life.

There is another form... like in mad cow.. these happen by another agent again different from virus and bacteria called prions. These are simply proteins (no DNA/RNA).. they convert all proteins into themself..

Hope that answers your question and also gives you insight into the world of the microbes and the almost magical powers they have!!.
