Pakistan Supported, Trained Terror Groups: Musharraf

Pakistan Supported, Trained Terror Groups: Pervez Musharraf

Quote:
Former Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has admitted in an interview that Islamabad supported and trained groups like the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) in the 1990s to carry out militancy in Kashmir. The former army chief has also said that Lashkar leaders like Hafiz Saeed and Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi enjoyed the status of heroes at that time.

Speaking to Pakistani news channel Dunya News on Sunday, Mr Musharraf said, "In the 1990s, the freedom struggle began in Kashmir...At that time, Lashkar-e- Taiba and 11 or 12 other organisations were formed. We supported them and trained them as they were fighting in Kashmir at the cost of their lives."

He was responding to a question about action against 2008 Mumbai attack masterminds Saeed and Lakhvi. Saeed is among India's most wanted men and roams free in Pakistan, often making provocative anti-India speeches. Lakhvi and six other accused are facing trial for planning and executing the attack on November 26, 2008 that left 166 people dead. But he was granted bail by a Pakistani court earlier this year, triggering a strong protest from India.

"The Kashmiri freedom fighters including Hafiz Saeed and Lakhvi were our heroes at that time. Later on, the religious militancy turned into terrorism. Now they (referring to terrorists in Pakistan) are killing their own people here and this should be controlled and stopped," he said.

When asked whether Saeed and Lakhvi should also be "controlled and stopped", Mr Musharraf said: "No comments."

Mr Musharraf also said that "religious militancy" was started by Pakistan which brought militants from all over the world to fight against Soviet forces.

"We trained Taliban and sent them to fight against Russia. Taliban, Haqqani, Osama Bin Laden and Zawahiri were our heroes then. Later they became villains," he said, adding that people need to understand the whole environment at that time.

Re: Pakistan Supported, Trained Terror Groups: Musharraf

Mush has admitted this earlier too. This time he was louder & getting more coverage.
Surprising fact is, supposedly average Pakistanis (as perceived over Internet), either deny it or find nothing wrong with it.
Terrorism & extremism has state patronage in Pakistan. The state should either openly admit it or stop it outright. Otherwise, it does not take an Einstein to figure out that sooner or later, it will backfire. But average Pakistani is not able to figure this out even when their back is on fire. Are they fools or playing coy??

But a former head of state and army chief saying this is amazing. Is he trying to embarrass Sharif and thus gain political ground? Will your country act on Pakistan for this? They are going on giving defense deals to Pukes.

LoL. I thought the same. regarding, OBL the only surprise is that he was actually 100 miles away, and not right in the heart of Islamabad.

Its changing over the years, it was a 'Valuable ally of free world'. At least in this respect, BO has been better than his predecessor. Trump is making good noises now.
Trump calls for Indian intervention if Pakistan becomes ‘unstable’

This will lead to nothing.

Pakistani army is not clan based institution while Pakistani politics is.

So Musharraf will shout for some time before eventually dying out.

I agree and I don't why but we Indians have the habit of jumping at everything. Didn't the world already knew it? Almost every Intel organization from CIA to MOSAD to MI knew this and so did their governments. This is just another barb from a general who is irrelevant in current situation.

Yes, even literally like Ayub Khan and Yahya Khan died, Generals were never accused nor will ever be accused in Pakistan, so he will die his natural death.

MOSSAD was part of plan that provided Pakistan with weapon in Soviet occupied Afghanistan

One of my friend in intellgence once told me, if CIA has lost is MI6 will find it. claiming that Her Majesty's MI6 is more capable
