Cheap crime news thread...

Keep this thread running with funny crime news with chori/chakari/cheating etc... Not to make fun of others predicaments, purely catering to voyeurs with a taste for crime columns in cheap magazines...

Cheap SIM dream turns sour for many

Promising cheap call rates, duo sells SIM cards for Rs 1,500 each to 40 staffers of govt office; AirTel says they were not its representatives

When 40-odd employees of Charity Commissioner’s office in Worli were approached on Thursday by two people claiming to be Airtel representatives, offering cheap connections exclusively for government employees, they were delighted. Each employee bought two-three connections. But they did not know they were paying for a scheme that never existed.

The representatives collected Rs 1,500 for each connection, but the SIM cards were never activated. The representatives disappeared soon and when the employees contacted Airtel, it said they were not running any such scheme and they had not sent any representatives to the office.

The employees have now complained to the Worli police.

According to Mohan More, 45, one of the victims, a boy named Ashish and a girl named Simran came to the Charity Commissioner’s office at Worli Naka on Thursday around 1 pm. They claimed to be representatives of Airtel and offered a connection launched exclusively for government employees. They said that in the new connection each mobile to mobile call would cost only 10 paisa per minute, while mobile to landline would cost 50 paisa per minute.

They demanded Rs 1,500 for the connection in which the employees would get Rs 1,000 worth talktime while Rs 500 would be refunded three months later. The employees would have to recharge their phone every three months with a Rs 200 refill card and after four refills the connection would be turned into lifetime connection.

More said, “It was a very lucrative offer. Several of us bought two-three cards planning to gift it to family members as well. The representatives made us fill Airtel forms and operated very confidently. We never suspected anything. In fact, on Thursday they had only 30 cards which were all sold out.

“On Friday, they came back with 40-odd cards which were again sold out. Those who could not get cards paid in advance and the representatives promised to return on Saturday with cards, but never did.”

The employees had been promised that their cards would be activated the very next day, but when till Sunday nothing happened, the employees got suspicious.

“We approached the Lower Parel Airtel office on Monday to enquire about the connection. To our shock, we were informed that no such scheme existed. We immediately approached the Worli police and lodged a complaint,” says More.

Senior Inspector at Worli police station Bharat Worlikar said, “The employees of Charity Commissioner’s office have approached us with the complaint. We are investigating the matter and are looking for the boy and the girl who had come to sell the SIM cards.”

An Airtel spokesperson said, “This case pertains to an unauthorised sale made on our behalf. We will identify the offenders and will ensure that immediate legal action is taken against them. We sincerely regret any inconvenience caused and urge consumers to only deal with our authorised retailers and sales agents.”

Don't know whether this belongs here, but it is funny...

Nude burglar in video cock-up

A man wearing nothing but thong broke into a house brandishing a kitchen knife, say police. Another day, just another nude burglar story, you might say. His masterstroke, however, was that he filmed himself doing it. And then managed to leave the video behind at the scene of the crime.

Unlike previous stories of entirely naked burglary that we've reported, Rodney McMillen made an effort to protect his modesty with a thong when he broke into a woman's house in Kentucky at 3am on September 20. He was also carrying a knife.

This is a very, very bizarre case, to say the least

The woman was in the house at the time, and impressively managed to fend off the bethonged, knife-wielding gentleman, who promptly ran away and hid in some trees.

Upon arrival, police discovered a video camera that thong-guy had left behind. Upon viewing the tape, they found footage that McMillen shot of himself, in the thong, as he broke into the house, police say.

As if that wasn't enough to help them identify the suspect, he helpfully left footage of his family on the end of the tape that he hadn't managed to record over. An officer managed to identify some of the family members, and eventually arrested McMillen hiding out at his mother's house in Ohio. He has now been charged with first-degree burglary.

Fort Mitchell Police Chief Steve Hensley commented: 'This is a very, very bizarre case, to say the least.'

Re: Cheap crime news thread...

Well, this is not a crime (or is it) but it is very funny... check the bill (check?) out in the link.

Restaurant sorry over F word bill

A restaurant owner has apologised after diners had their very own F word experience - without Gordon Ramsay.

Ten friends found the abusive and sexually-explicit message on their bill at Joe Delucci's Italian restaurant in Bird Street, Lichfield, Staffordshire.

Diner Clare Watkin said she thought it was written after they complained about poor service.

The party from Walsall had gone to the restaurant on Friday. Owner Nigel Langsdon has begun an investigation.

Ms Watkin said: "I couldn't believe it. The bill read 'fish cakes', which one of us had for a starter, and it was written right above it - absolutely disgusting language.

"We actually booked the table for 8 o' clock in the evening, by the time they had taken our order it was quarter to nine and we didn't actually receive our food until quarter past 10."

She added: "I'd like a written apology from the restaurant and I'd also like some compensation.

"I think that the way that we've been spoken to is absolutely outrageous."

TV chef Gordon Ramsay's foul-mouthed diatribes on his Channel 4 show The F Word have given viewers an insight into the type of language often used in the restaurant kitchen.

Joe Delucci's owner Mr Langsdon said the message had been meant to be seen only by kitchen staff and he did not know how it ended up as an item on the receipt.

He said: "That shouldn't come out on the bill, so we've got to find out what's gone wrong there.

"But we have apologised unreservedly to the girls concerned and said that they're very welcome to come back and have a free meal and we'd like them to."

He has also offered to donate the bill for their meal to charity.

The cost of the meal came to £284.68, including a 10% service charge.

Re: Cheap crime news thread...

This definitely fits here...

Thief steals urinal sensor for Mercedes

A young mechanic, Wang Chi-sheng, is suspected of stealing a urinal sensor, which he said he planned to use to modify a Mercedes Benz car.

Wang has been accused of trespassing for entering a closed-down gas station restroom and stealing the heat sensors used on the urinals. Police escorting Wang stated that they laughed as they listened to his plan to use the sensors to test out his latest designs for improving a Mercedes Benz car.

The Taiwan Mercedes' technicians department said the young man's scheme was "unbelievable," commenting that "the probability of successfully using a sensor from a public urinal to replace special factory-made sensors was and remains zero."

What's more, the technicians explained the thief's actions are quite dangerous, and could even lead to creating an electric current that leads to the engine, which would cause it to ignite and possibly even explode.

Re: Cheap crime news thread...

Here's one

FAIRFIELD - It's a theft that just doesn't add up.

A man who tried to steal cash from the Dunkin' Donuts outlet on the Post Road on Monday night fled with an adding machine that he apparently mistook for a cash register.

Police said the unidentified man walked into the doughnut shop about 10:28 p.m. and handed a clerk a note stating that he had a gun and a bomb. The man's note said he would use both if he didn't get cash, police said.

The man then grabbed an adding machine, which had no cash drawers, from the counter and ran from the shop.

The thief fled in a black car, possibly a Pontiac, police said.

And one More

Here's a tip: if you steal a printer used to print driver's licenses, don't call the manufacturer asking for driver software.

It's a lesson that Timothy Scott Short learned all too well this month, when he got arrested after placing a couple of calls to Digimarc Corp.'s tech support line.

Short, 33, is facing felony charges for possession of "document-making implements," in connection with the theft of a Digimarc printer used by the state of Missouri to manufacture driver's licenses.

The printer, along with a PC, were stolen on the evening of Oct. 5 from the St. Charles contract office of the Missouri Department of Revenue, said Trish Vincent, director of the department. These offices are run by individuals who are subcontracted by the department to issue driver's licenses, Vincent said. The pilfered printer could be used to produce a license, Vincent said.

The PC, however, was locked with a key and because the key was stored in a secure location, the PC was unusable to the thief, said Vincent.

So what do you do when you have a stolen driver's license printer, but can't use the PC that goes with it? Enter Digimarc's tech support line.

According to a sworn statement by Secret Service Special Agent John Bush, someone who identified himself as "Scott" called Digimarc two days later and asked if he could buy printer drivers for the model of printer that had been swiped from the St. Charles office.

The Secret Service agent later listened to a recording of this call and recognized Short's voice from a prior investigation, Bush said. The caller also gave Digimarc the same phone number Short had used in an unrelated identity theft case, Bush said.

Short was charged on Oct. 11, and is facing 10 years in prison and a US$250,000 fine, according to court filings.

"The stolen equipment contains the identifying information and photographs of between 200 to 500 Missouri residents," Bush said in the statement. "The only use of the equipment is the manufacture of state identification documents."

The state has sent notification letters to those affected by the theft, Vincent said. The computer contained name, address and date of birth data, but not Social Security numbers, she added.

Digimarc declined to explain how the Secret Service ended up listening to its customer support calls. "Because of a confidentiality agreement with our customer and because this is a criminal matter, we are not able to comment on the incident," wroteDigimarc spokeswoman Leslie Constans via e-mail.

Re: Cheap crime news thread...

This happened in 2003 in Houston, a thief took off with ATM machine after holding the clerk on the gun point.

Its not your typical ATM where in it will dispense $'s , but a machine which would dispense tickets for the worth of money you have requested from the ATM, then the user has to go to the clerk to get the money in exchange for the tickets.

The funny thing is that the guy was an ex-worker of that store.

Sahi banda hai yeh Patel, he was watching his luggage being stolen away!!

NRI family robbed in Bharuch

BHARUCH: A non-resident Gujarati (NRG) family from New Jersey in USA was robbed off $8,000 and nine passports in Jhadeshwar of Bharuch district on Thursday afternoon. The family was visiting a temple when the incident took place.

A complaint of theft has been registered and investigation into the matter initiated.

Police said Patel and his family came from New Jersey to Jambusar to attend a marriage ceremony a week ago and were scheduled to return on Saturday.

According to Bharuch taluka police officials, the incident took place around 1.30 pm when Minesh Patel, along with his family members, was at the Swaminarayan temple in Jhadeshwar.

When Patel was parking his car near the temple, he saw a man cleaning their car. The family thought he was doing so for money.

But soon a Tata Indica came near their car and the person cleaning the Patels’ car opened it and quickly shifted all the luggage kept in it. Before Minesh could react, the Indica fled.

According to the complainant, there were three bags having four American and five Indian passports, along with $8,000, return air tickets and Rs 6,000 in cash.

Minesh’s wife Falguni Patel told TOI, "Our air tickets for USA were confirmed and we were scheduled to leave on Saturday, but everything has been stolen and we need to apply for passports again which will take time."

She said the local administration should deploy police force at public places to avoid such incidences.

According to police, an eye witness confirmed that there were about three to five persons who were seen in the parking area of the temple. They were shifting luggage from a Maruti Van to an Indica having a yellow number plate, the eyewitness told the police.

Who is the criminal here, the one who got caught or the one who filmed him?

MSU students cosy up, caught on CD

VADODARA: Everyone knew that couples frequently cosied up behind bushes in M S University’s sprawling campus. But this became a major controversy on Thursday, when Baroda Bar Association president Narendra Tiwari released a CD of such couples caught in the act on campus.

The CD has a recording of three separate couples fondling each other. Tiwari claimed that he has two more CDs with similar content and that he will be releasing them soon.

The fact that one of the accused looks like a former faculty representative of the MSU students’ union has only complicated matters.

"I was aware of such indecent acts on campus for quite some time, but did not have concrete evidence. Hence, I decided to record such incidents and present them before the authorities. If authorities do not curb such acts, we will soon have a Patan-like situation here as well," said Tiwari.

"This is just one CD of the three that I have in my possession. I had to edit the contents. These clippings have been shot in broad daylight. What is surprising is that security personnel were nowhere to be seen when the couples were indulging in such acts," Tiwari, who is also a former MSU student leader and senate member added.

Tiwari stated that he wanted to draw the attention of MSU authorities towards the issue and hence recorded the acts.

The CD shows couples kissing and fondling each other. So engrossed were they that they didn’t even realise that they were being filmed by someone from a distance. One youth has been even caught masturbating.

Tiwari alleged that MSU syndicate and senate members are not concerned about the prestige of the university.

"How can such acts escape the eyes of officials? I think student leaders and citizens should demand answers from MSU authorities and urge them to initiate stringent action against such couples," he said. MSU authorities said they will soon see the CD.

Master thief's rags to riches story

NEW DELHI: From herding cattle to gambling in tony Goa casinos, most wanted thief Nadeem Yousuf's is the proverbial rags to riches story. Born in a family of several children in a Ghaziabad village, Nadeem had to herd cattles for survival as a teenager but went on to become a master thief, rivalled perhaps only by the legendary Bunty chor.

The investigations after his arrest by the crime branch earlier this week has left even the cops stunned. He has been found involved in more than 70 cases of burglaries reported not just from Ghaziabad and East Delhi but also north, south and southwest Delhi. While Bunty was more in-your-face, a master trickster, Nadeem was the quintessential thief who quietly went about the task of breaking into flats, while the owners were away, with help from his wife Shahana and brother-in-law Raees. These two were also arrested and there was no other member of the gang.

Unlike Bunty, who came from a relatively urban background, Nadeem went to a government school and dropped out when he was in class V. Neither his father in Hapur's Bhojpur village could afford his education, nor he displayed any propensity towards books. In the village though, he learnt the art of using 'farmabardar' (a kind of iron rod), a house breaking implement much in demand among burglars all over north India. Nadeem used it to great effect and amassed a fortune — gold and diamond jewellery worth more than Rs 30 lakh, cars like Ikon, Honda City, Santro and two flats in Ghaziabad which he bought from stolen cash.

The 33-year-old who couldn't afford a kurta now loved to flaunt Puma and Lacoste. He liked to splurge, mostly in hotels and casinos of Goa, but remained intensely devoted to his wife, according to the police. The cops have also learnt that he once spent Rs 4 lakh for a cabaret performance in Mumbai. As hard as he partied and lived life to the full, Nadeem never chased girls though, which perhaps explains the excellent relations he enjoyed with his wife. Shahana later told the police that she was proud of being Nadeem's wife. Police officers said that back home in Bhojpur, which has actually earned notoriety for producing burglars, Nadeem is looked upon as a hero for making it big. Nadeem's father was a fruit seller in Sahibabad. His first brush with crime was in 1995 when he stole cattle from a neighbouring village with help from his friend Saleem. He was arrested many times and sent to judicial custody. In the year 1999, he was caught in an attempt to murder case in his village. He later joined a gang headed by notorious criminal Arif. He was apprehended four times in Delhi. He was last released from jail in January 2007 on bail and he never turned up in court to face trial.

On the contrary, he formed his own gang with only Shahana and Raees as members. In the next six months, he purchased a Maruti 800, Ford Ikon, Santro and Honda City cars. He used these cars to strike in posh colonies like Vasant Kunj, Vasant Vihar and in Noida.

Re: Cheap crime news thread...

Response to the above TOIlet article by an anguished lady who seemed to have been burgled by the super chor...

Anita Issar,New Delhi, says:Dear Sirs, I read the article regarding this thief Nadeem who has been shown as a hero but I would appreciate if you could highlight on the unfortunate working class people like me who were duped of their hard earned valuables by Nadeem. Above all our system be it Police Departmentor the Judicial system is equally to be blamed from where he procurred bail despite the fact that investigation under my FIR No747 dated 28/08/2006 at Dwarka Sec-23, poilice Station is still pending. I complained to Complaint cell of LG Delhi's good office and at their behest only ACP Sh.Bhag Singh-ji of Dwarka PS called me to assure me that thief named Nadeem is behind bars he called me on 22 May 2007 whereas you Newspaper shows he was balied out in Jan 2007. I am surprised how could ACP quoted me that he is behind bars whereas he was bailed out then. All records are lying with me be it thief's and ACP's voice recording or requests made in writing. I have sufficient proof to show how I approached for justice and how our system responded. Is there anything left that justice shall ever be given to me. Poilce people are catching the thieves judiciary is bailing them out. Medals are being given to the respective Police inspectors everytime they catch culprits but to my surprise what is the outcome, have provided back the captured valuables to the victims. No, Police never bothered to. I know many victims like me who were never given anything back. Police never bothered to show me even after my written request for the Supardari. Is there anything left to be proud of our system. We got independece to become slaves at the hands of hero's like this supar chor and Superheros like some of our most corrupt Politicians. I am sorry to comment on at the sad state of affairs Now time has come to redefine the word "Democracy".

Re: Cheap crime news thread...

This rapist father is a real bastard, not even an iota of repentance... but then if he is of that nature he wouldn't have touched his daughter with that immoral intention...

Why only me, asks rapist father; sent to 10 yrs jail

A father, convicted for 10 years for raping his teenage daughter, questioned the judge as to why he was being punished while others of his ilk were “roaming free”.
Ashafali (name changed) was sentenced on Saturday to 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine of Rs1,000 for repeatedly raping his daughter Anees (name changed) from July 2005 to May 2006 at their home at Bharat Nagar in Andheri.
After his sentencing, he questioned the judge, “Aur log kiye vo ghoom rahe hai, mai kyun andar ja raha hoon?” (Why was he to be incarcerated for raping his daughter when so many rapists were roaming free?).
Afraid that her father would rape her sister, 13-year-old Anees (name changed) lodged a false complaint of gang rape against 10 innocent persons including her teacher.
“Finally, in the safe environment of the court, she testified to their innocence and informed the judge that it was her father Ashafali (name changed to protect the daughter’s identity) who actually raped her”, said prosecutor Anju Singh.
A second accused, Abdul Aziz Khan, Anees’ Arabic teacher at the mosque in Bharat Nagar, Andheri was acquitted. “Ashafali was completely unrepentant. In his statement, he readily admitted to the judge that he had raped Anees but claimed that it was a gang rape,” said prosecutor Usha Jadhav who took over from Singh midway through the case.
Anees (name changed) testified that she and her two siblings lived with their grandfather. They would often visit their father and spend a few days with him. In July 2005 during one such sojourn, Ashafali raped her, and then continued to do so time and again.
Later, with the help of a social worker, Anees lodged a complaint with the police on May 8, 2006.

It provides for the legal, unlicensed citation or incorporation of copyrighted material in another author's work under a four-factor balancing test.
