Anyone interested? Zimbabwe - achche din?

Army Takes over Zimbabwe

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-41997982

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/world-africa-41994362

Zimbabwe Army appears to have taken over most institutions and put Robert Mugabe under house arrest. If this ends in removing Mugabe from power, it would be after 37 years of rule! He seemed to have been angling for his wife to take over, but that does not seem to be happening now.

whats more interesting is that there doesn't seem to be any killing or call for killings yet. I have even read opinions of people who think the best way would be to exile Mugabe. probably is an indication of his stature in the country.

it was known as rhodesia in colonial times , after sir cecil rhodes who conquered it . it had some white people after independence . but they ran away mostly after mugabe declared a dictatorship overthrowing democracy . mugabe is famous for his quirky quotes . still works better than most african countries , which admittedly does not mean much .

in africa it about security of life and limb , not dhanda . the patels/gujjus of uganda had to go either to britain or back to india after idi amin took power . idi amin was literally a cannibal who ate human flesh . so was emperor bokassa of central african republic , who served his guests food cooked from flesh of prisoners at the party he threw for becoming emperor ; before that he was merely president .

Re: Anyone interested? Zimbabwe - achche din?

Yeah I know quite a bit about Uganda and Idi Amin, also Zimbabwe .. but same story more or less in these parts of Africa. Goras enjoyed dual citizenship living in African countries as bigshots/royalty/upper class there and giving contracts to Brits. Some day army chief realizes the Presidency is for the taking.. makes his move and rules until a new challenger comes in or he gets old and dies.

Re: Anyone interested? Zimbabwe - achche din?

I remember seeing a entry in my folks passports issued in 70s- “Not valid for Union of South Africa and Colony of Rhodesia”.

Robert Mugabe used to show up in DD news as a NAM leader.

Else, just another failed African state.

Re: Anyone interested? Zimbabwe - achche din?

The failure is spectacular! This is a country which uses American dollars as their unofficial currency because their inflation on own currency is in some thousand percent.

The mobile company in Zim has a pre-paid market of more than 95%!

White farmers were driven away in the last few decades and the man who was once respected in the country like Gandhi in India became a dictator.

What is interesting is not what happened in the past but what can happen in the future. There is a whole load of potential there

and risks and threats. Once Zim becomes open to the world, there will be competition about influences. China has made inroads into Africa and can sweep Zimbabwe at this stage. If other countries become interested then it can either become an afghanistan or it can become another South Africa.

Re: Anyone interested? Zimbabwe - achche din?

93 and still refusing to quit. Mugabe could be an inspiration to Advani,, 3 years younger

Could also lead to another perspective - Nehru, for all his drawbacks, did leave India as a functioning democracy, though his daughter and more so grandson had other ideas.

Or was it out visionary constitution authors Ambedkar and Rajendra Prasad who ensured things remain in check.

A lot of people apparantly.

China has most of Africa in its grip now. This is an opportunity for other countries to reduce that.... orrrr if no-one cares, then leave it be and see China's influence rise.

Inglistan may be busy with many things, but among those interested in Zimbabwe, Inglistan is on top. Will post a snapshot of google I took yesterday.
