Ashdoc's movie review---Manmarziyaan

This movie is set in Punjab state among sikh people of Amritsar . Rumi ( Taapsee Pannu ) is in a no holds barred physical relationship with Vicky ( Vicky Kaushal ) . But the country they live in is conservative India and Rumi's reputation is taking a beating among her townsfolk . Her family asks her to get married to Vicky , but Vicky is not ready to get married so soon . He is a wannabe DJ who dreams of cutting his own album one day .

So Rumi gives him the ultimatum to either come to her home to ask for her hand in marriage or to scram off from her life permanently . But Vicky does neither ; he keeps on vowing eternal love for Rumi but is not responsible enough for marriage . And Rumi too loves Vicky or rather lusts for his body and cannot leave him . Whenever she tries to leave him , Vicky sends messages on her smartphone and she cannot tear herself apart from him . They try to elope but Vicky forgets to bring his wallet containing money , thus proving his immaturity and they have to go back to their respective houses .

So life cannot go on only on a heady cocktail of lust and sex . It requires people to be in steady relationships with each other , and Rumi's family convinces her to marry Robbie ( Abhishek Bachchan ) rather than the commitment phobic Vicky .

Enter the liberal who has lived in the liberal west . Robbie who has come to marry after having lived in a western country for many years knows about Rumi's torrid bedroom sessions with Vicky and in fact finds her hot and wants to marry her and her only . The fact that she has a lover is immaterial for him and he hopes to win her heart . But even though Robbie and Rumi get married , Rumi cannot forget Vicky nor can Vicky forget Rumi .

So the erstwhile lovers continue to pine for each other and they have sex even after she is married to another man . But as days pass by and Rumi starts living with Robbie , she finds him more mature and responsible and gentle . And she begins to like him . But he does not have the fire and passion that she and Vicky shared , and her mind begins to oscillate among the two men .

And Robbie...how long is he going to stretch his liberalism and try to win his wife's heart when she cannot deny that she still dreams of her lover when Robbie is making love to her ? So what will happen to the love triangle ? Whom will Rumi choose or will Robbie dump her even before she has a chance to choose ? Watch the movie for the answers .

Taapsee Pannu plays a free spirited vivacious woman very well and brings real zing into her acting . Vicky Kaushal brings fire and real passion into his acting . Abhishek Bachchan's role is to be a more sedate personality .

The language spoken in the movie is partly punjabi and some dialogues are difficult to understand for a non punjabi like me . But it is not difficult to understand the flow of the story . Songs in the movie are excellent and worth humming for weeks , even though they are partly in punjabi too and their words are not easy to understand . Background music is good . Photography is decent .

Verdict---Decent .

Three stars out of five .

Wink Re: Ashdoc's movie review---Manmarziyaan

Okay, I have not seen this movie, but after reading the review, this is what I would write in my style.
  • Boy and Girl fuck like rabbits all day all night
  • Families want them to marry or break up
  • Girl is all wet and hot for the boy but marries another per family pressure
  • New man okay with wife fucking old lover

Re: Ashdoc's movie review---Manmarziyaan

This is Abhishek's second movie as a foreign returned - this role never suits him, he cannot pull of the tag.

on second thoughts, the movie story - if you leave the sex out - sounds quite a lot like hum dil de chuke sanam -

girl and boy luvv each other
boy commitment fattu
family pressures girl to marry 'chingari koi bhadke' simple guy
simple guy liberal and accepts that wife loves other guy
girl torn between fattu and simple guy

HDDCS is in A very conservative setting. The girl's father literally forces her to marry ajay devgan without asking for her choice. Ajay does not know about his wife's former love and learns about it after marriage . He then decides to reunite the two .

Here the setting is modern with the girl having open sex with her boyfriend. She is not forced by anyone to marry abhishek . She marries him because her boyfriend refuses to marry her .abhishek knows about the affair but finds the girl hot and sexy . He has no intention of giving her back to her lover but tries to win her heart .

so you agree they are similar with some differences? (btw Aishwarya asks Salman to ask her hand in marriage and he does not. that is one of the reasons she agrees to marry Ajay D)
imagine imran hashmi instead of sallu, sunny leone instead of Aishwarya and Abhishek instead of Ajay d, you will get same to same movie

No . Ajay Devgan tries to reunite the lovers but abhishek does not . He tries to keep the heroine for himself .

Re: Ashdoc's movie review---Manmarziyaan

Hum Salman ko dechuke was a bakwaas movie. Horrible dialog delivery by Ash. No wonder she won the filmfare award for that. i have a lot of posts on that elsewhere in EC.

In the end abhishek is tired of taapsee sleeping with her boyfriend even though she is married to him . He is particularly miffed because she admits to dreaming of her boyfriend even when she is making love with abhishek .

So he divorces her . But by that time she has fallen in love with abhishek and convince him to be with her again . This after they have performed the divorce formalities. Luckily Sikhs don't have nikaah halala or the boyfriend's help may be needed again

This sounds a remake of Rajnigandha... at least up until the marriage

In short this is a mew version of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. Its updated to today's times where live-in relationships, open fucking etc are considered okay.

In the older movie the guy wins over the woman. In this movie the gal wins over the man, even after divorce.

Cut out the sex and such innuendo and this movie might have flopped big time... anyway, I dont know how it is faring at the box office.

No . As saneless said it is more like remake of rajanigandha . The big difference is that in HDDCS ajay tries to reunite the two lovers. But abhishek does not and tries to make the marriage survive .

HDDCS seemed to be made to reiterate the old Indian code of patriarchy---that a woman must stay with her husband who has been selected by her father and must fall in love with him without regard for her own feelings . That is why it was such huge hit . Majority of Indian people seemed to agree with that notion .

This film is surprisingly doing okay at the box office inspite of the open sex of the heroine with her lover even after marriage ; times have changed . But it hardly has a chance to do as well as HDDCS as it is way too modern for a conservative audience.
