Black Friday: BYOS

Inspired by a thread at Anandtech "Holiday 2010 System Builder's Guide", I am going to shop for a mid-range system that is moderate to high in performance for graphics and high on CPU (with no overclocking) ...

Re: Black Friday: BYOS

First let's finalize what features you may need:

(1) Always ON -- then minimize power usage and low noise
(2) Floating Point -- Number crunching? <moderate>
(3) Graphics -- moderate graphics (any specs, anyone?)
(4) Boot time -- Reduce boot time? Use SSD
(5) OS -- Dualboot (Ubuntu/Win 7)
(6)

Good luck in BYOS, it's real fun.

Any specific reason for Win7? I find that Ubuntu has everything that we need and I'll never go back to windows unless I use some apps which are only available on windows (which sadly is case in office)

Yes that's the question for all of you BYOSers ... I mean, I did not follow any specs after pentium and these Anandtechers seem to rip out specs as if they are conversing in their native language with their grannies ... Now the interesting question is: do I really need to go through specs, benchmarks and other such stuff to understand what will help my need ...

I would want to ... but by the time I understand this whole gamut of specs, the processor industry would have moved forward to a new architecture ...

Landyadhai pai, 1500? Won't you get the same configuration ready-made for less than 1000? With warranty and all? Then why assemble?

There's usually some sale or coupon going on. Check some deal sites... I am sure you will get a near-close one.

Sounds right.

Landyabhai, don't have much idea of the heavy specs you've mentioned, but in the local market, there is now a sort of phobia for MSI motherboards - they work ok but problems with repairs and drivers.
