Exclamation Congres ki Jai Ho! Pune to face drinking water cut from Wednesday

I hope all Punekars now dance in the streets and sing Jai Ho! Congress ki Jai Ho!! I am amazed how they keep electing Suresh Kalmadi term after term.

And lets see what happens in the upcoming State assembly elections.

Till then Punekars can now join Mumbaikars in singing Jai Ho as they watch their taps dry out!

Pune to face drinking water cut from Wednesday
30 Jun 2009, 1734 hrs IST, PTI

PUNE: Pune will face 30% cut in drinking water supply from Wednesday. On Tuesday, it is 20%.

Khadakwasla, Panshet and Varasgoan dams, which supply water to the city, have water enough for only for 15 days. But the government is trying to see that the water from these dams be supplied to Pune for one month by imposing water cuts. There will be additional cut in water supply after one week if mansoon did not occur next week.

The decision of water cut was taken at a meeting of the state irrigation department and municipal authorities of Pune.

Pune municipal Commissioner Mahesh Zagde, other officials of the municipal body and the Irrigation Department authorities will meet and review the situation. "In view of scanty rainfall in catchment areas of the four dams, we are taking precautionary measures by increasing water cut to 30 per cent," Mahesh Zagde said.

He added, "We are facing an unprecedented situation. Today, we will follow the same timetable of water supply. After two days, we will hold another meeting with the irrigation department officials and decide on the new water distribution time-table."

And all Mumbaikars can also sing Congress ki Jai Ho when they get water once in 2 days!

Quote:
Mumbai may get water once in 2 days
30 Jun 2009, 0154 hrs IST, Clara Lewis, TNN

MUMBAI: The only megacity in the country assured of a daily supply of water may soon have to brace itself for piped water every other day.

“There has been practically no rain in the catchment areas and if the situation persists we will be forced to supply water only on alternate days,’’ said Anil Diggikar, additional municipal commissioner in charge of water supply. “We will watch the situation for another week and then curtail thesupply,’’ he added.

“Pune is already moving towards water supply on alternate days,’’ he said. In fact the PMC announced a 30% water cut on Monday. Diggikar ruled out cloud seeding, saying it was tried eight to ten years ago but the results were not encouraging. On June 9, the BMC had instituted a 10% cut after the monsoon failed to arrive on June 7. On June 20, it was increased to 20% as the rains were unsatisfactory.

Diggikar said the lakes had enough water to meet the city’s needs for the next one month. The BMC draws 3,450 million litres daily (mld) from six lakes. However, 20% or 680 mld is lost due to leakages and pilferage.

The supply will be first curtailed in the island city and western suburbs as the level in the lakes providing water to these areas has reached close to the lowest drawable level.

These include Modak Sagar, Tansa, Vihar, Tulsi and Upper Vaitarna.

The eastern suburbs, on the other hand, do not face a crisis as they receive water from Bhatsa lake where the level is still not a cause for worry. “We draw around 2,020 mld every day from Bhatsa,’’said Diggikar.

BJP corporator Yogesh Sagar, who for long has been demanding that the administration overhaul the existing water supply system, arrest leakage and bring in more equitable distribution, said it was a very serious matter. “If they cannot handle the situation in the absence of rain for one month, how will they manage for the rest of the year? They must think of the city’s water supply system in its totality and plan alternate sources of water for the city immediately,’’ he said.

There are about 1,400 wells and borewells in the city of which only 400 are functional. The rest are defunct as they have not been cleaned for years. Around 1,200 private tankers supply 1,000 million litres daily across the city. On an average, a tanker carrying 10,000 litres costs about Rs 2,500. The BMC on the other hand charges only Rs 3.50 per 1,000 litres. The BMC has ten tankers of its own. The larger tankers supply one lakh litres daily and the smaller ones about 60,000 litres.

Re: Congres ki Jai Ho! Pune to face drinking water cut from Wednesday

When Vajpayee started the super canal project to connect all rivers of India it was a good thing. But dear Congress party immediately scrapped the project! Had this super canal been developed, today water could have been 'imported' from other states with plenty of rainfall.
But come on, if BJP started this concept and work then it must be 'non secular', so they had to scrap it. Jai Ho!

Talking Re: Congres ki Jai Ho! Pune to face drinking water cut from Wednesday

And Delhi walas also deserve their dear Madam Sheila Dixit as their third term Chief Minister
Read how Delhi is dry and boiling!

Quote:
Nobody dying of thirst: CM to Oppn in House
30 Jun 2009, 2352 hrs IST, TNN

NEW DELHI: In a back-handed admission of the water crisis in the city, chief minister Sheila Dikshit told the Delhi Assembly on Tuesday that there may not be enough water to take a bath everyday but there is enough to drink, daring the opposition to give one example of somebody dying of thirst. She was replying to a discussion on the water problems and the cleaning of the Yamuna initiated by BJP members Sahab Singh Chauhan, Jai Bhagwan Aggarwal and O P Babbar.

Chauhan started off by talking about the reduction in budgetary allocation for DJB and Aggarwal criticized the government for taking "one and a half years to repair 22 handpumps''. But it was Krishna Nagar MLA Harshvardhan's allegation of the land mafia eying the Yamuna flood plains and an insinuation that this was one of the reasons why there was a lack of seriousness about cleaning the river that drew the sharpest reaction from the chief minister.

"It was your government that gave land in the Yamuna floodplain for the construction of Akshardham temple and Mr Vijay Kapoor defended the decision to set up a settlement there saying that it had to be near the temple. Now you have the nerve to accuse us of being in league with the land mafia!'' Dikshit said before admitting that there are flaws in DJB's distribution network that are being rectified.

"By summer next year we will have 57MGD more water and we are making all efforts to augment water supply. But one has to also understand that annually Delhi's population goes up by 4-5 lakh people and there are another 12 lakh who come to the city for work. We have been giving water to all of them and we are careful about water. That is why we have plans of water harvesting in parks. It is true there may be some areas where there is not enough water to have a bath everyday but I am sure nobody has died of thirst as the opposition has been alleging,'' Dikshit said.

She refuted allegations of contaminated water saying that not more than 2-3% samples were found contaminated while according to WHO norms range of 4-5% is acceptable. On Yamuna, she repeated the plan for construction of the interceptor sewer system that Engineers India Limited is executing.

The chief minister's reply incidentally was almost the only thing during the discussion that really dealt with water, with members from both treasury and opposition benches engaging in exchanges that were entirely political and in some cases, unparliamentary too. While Chauhan described the government as "lame duck'', Rajinder Nagar MLA and DJB vice-chairman Ramakant Goswami hit back in his reply to say that Chauhan had "lost it''. He even went on to "congratulate'' DJB for recycling water and urged Babbar to thank the chief minister for it. Tarvinder Singh Marwah hardly spoke a word on water but delivered a passionate Dikshit eulogy.

Residents frown on random power cuts

Quote:
Bangalore : Frequent and long power cuts have made life miserable for residents, but they seem to realize that less rainfall is to be
blamed. Their only complaints: why didn't the government anticipate the situation, and why are the power cuts unscheduled?

FYI: Karnataka is ruled by BJP. Let us not talk about water problem in Karnataka.

The point I am trying to make is. This is not a particular Party issue. All the Parties are equal bad when we talk about infrastructre in India.

India is the most populated land in the word and not China ... will not be a surprising news. Downhill all the way into the pits ... slowly but surely. No electricity ... no water.

So there is no water to shower daily but no-one has died of thirst yet ... only a pakka follower of Nehru can make such a statement. Wasn't it Nehru who made similar claim about the land taken over by China after the war? Useless land ... he is known to have declared in the parliament.

Cha Pai, Read History. Delhi was always full of Morons as in some other Thread we have read that some Muslim Ruler captured Delhi with just 18 soldiers. What do you expect of Delhi people.

Delhi it is expected, what pains more is that when Maharashtra selects back Congress and that too after 26/11 and which is shameless enough to rename Sea Link as rajeev Setu although it was started by ShivSena and named after Savarkar.

In Australia particularly Melbourne the govt says do not shower for more than 15 mins. Is that true because I heard it from many Australians.
