In support of the Caste System!

In support of the Caste System

There is a lot of disinformation regarding the caste system. The caste system is the very foundation of Hinduism. It is the one of the few things common between current Hindu practices and the Vedic times (Indus valley civilization) and it has survived centuries of abuse in the hands of foreign rulers and malicious politicians. There is constant drum-beating against the caste system by Hindus, non-Hindus, social organizations, and everyone in general. LET ME COME OUT AND SAY THAT I SUPPORT THE CASTE SYSTEM. Here is my explanation:

There is a BIG difference VARNA and JATI:

Varna (caste) is the typical functional division of a society. Every Hindu belongs to one of the four large caste groups (Brahman, Kshatriya, Vaishya, and Shudra). The caste system is a brilliant social institution (if used properly) to create and establish the rule of law. It provides an organizational structure that works at a unit level (villages, towns) and can expand to a national level (districts, states, regions, kingdoms!). This provides social and political stability, law and order, and a liberalized trade environment. This is what is needed for a society to thrive. The caste system arguably brought about the golden age in India.

Then there is JATI, which is also termed as ‘Caste’ but is NOT the same as Varna and NOT something that is discussed in the Vedas. Jati puts you in an endogamous group into which one is born into and will marry within. There are approximately 3,000 jatis in contemporary society. Jati, although may have been derived from Varna, there is very little in common.

"While the term varna refers to the fours different classes in society, the term jati refers to the different endogamous sections of the Hindu Society which is known as castes." ("An Introduction to Hinduism", Gavin Flood.)

I can go on…but pl share your thoughts too!!
