Times changed

When I was young, my mom used to tell me not to accept sweets given to me by strangers.
last night I found myself telling my 6 year old to take shelter if she hears a gun shot...and then play the youtube video of what a gun shot would sound like

My heart is yet again broken by all the kids who lost their lives yesterday in Florida.

Re: Times changed

Sadly, this has become commonplace in USA.

An American colleague went to a technical conference recently. Some Canadians attending the conference while chit chatting during happy hour, asked the Americans if they owned guns. My colleague was like .. I hardly know anybody who owns a gun. The perception is that almost every American owns a gun.

Re: Times changed

perhaps its about communities or areas of US where guns are more prevalent? we have members here who advocate gun rights - doesnt mean they have guns themselves but the idea is not so uncommon.

Why would one need to own a gun anyway? This is something beyond me.

Re: Times changed

The number of firearms available to American civilians is estimated at around 310 million, according to a 2009 National Institute of Justice (NIJ) report

India is home to the second-largest civilian firearm stockpile, estimated at 46 million. is that right?

The most updated estimates -- now more than a decade old -- place the worldwide civilian gun cache at around 650 million.

^^
As per wiki, per capita civilian ownership of firearms in India is 25 times lower than US and somewhat below china too. So the rank should be 3rd or below

I think the one I quoted only talked about total number of firearms, not per capita.

There are some areas where there’s 2 sherrifs and 10 cops in 100 square mile radius. That means they have to do patroling on highways, attend to local crime, etc. In some remote areas you must have a gun for protection.

Automatic guns that can shoot 100s of bullets per minute should be banned immediately. Hand guns may be not.

One classmate in Switzerland told that Swiss Gun ownership rate is high but there are laws which regulate ownership tightly.

While it is impractical to substantially change second amendment, some more checks could be added.

To put this in perspective, there have been 100 amendments in Indian constitution in last 68 years, in US, there have been 27 amendments in 240 years. This includes first 10 amendments which came into being in the 'Bill of rights' in 1791. The second amendment is a part of that.

The amendments are mostly landmark ones like abolition of slavery (13th), prohibition (18th) and repeal of prohibition (21st). Looks like all states need to ratify the amendment.

Actually our numbers for India and US are close. if we multiply per capita with the total population (1.01X300 mil for US and .042 X 1.2 billion for India). Only, to find out the rank, i would have to multiply the per capita numbers with the population for all the countries (which is too much of an effort for lazy me). Only, China with 4.6 guns per 100 is higher than India and it has a population higher than India. So, that should put US and China higher than India.

or just for the heck of it - its a right granted by the constitution afterall. My friends in US tell me guns even come as free gift - with a new car from the dealer for example.

I am a part of Barry Eisler's book group and he made a comment...

I mentioned there that US has everything India has. Population, poverty, democracy you name it. Then why is it that people kill others with guns? because there is lack of control over it.
some guys said that how foreigners like me come to their land and strip their rights. I politely responded that owning a gun is a privilege that is bestowed on you...
Seriously though....they really believe that having a gun is the answer to everything.

Re: Times changed

^^
I stand neutral in the contentious gun debate. Suppose if gun control happens like other developed countries, maniacal and accidental killings might decrease but smaller communities will be unsafe. Plus terrorists could use Salman Khan style vehicle attacks. Overall 19-20 ka difference.

i myself am tempted to buy guns, but there is a big risk of my boys getting hold of it and accidentally firing it. So, i have let that be.

For the gun control walas, they are just wasting there energy. It is not going to happen.
