Quota raises ugly head - Rajasthan: 13 killed, 100 injured in violence

PTI | May 29, 2007 | 10:24 IST

Thirteen people, including a policeman, were killed and at least 100 injured in clashes and police firing in three districts of Rajasthan on Tuesday during protests by the Gurjar community on a quota issue, after which the army was called out in two places.

State Home Minister G C Kataria said two policemen had gone missing in Dausa district but agitators claimed they had been killed and their bodies were in their custody. The missing police personnel were identified as Mohammed Yunus and Dungar Singh.

Highways linking Jaipur with Agra, Delhi, Kota and Sawai Madhopur were blocked by angry demonstrators and the Army was deployed on the badly-hit Jaipur-Dausa-Agra and Kota-Jaipur national highways.

The Army also staged a flag march on the Jaipur-Dausa highway where no traffic was being allowed.

The protestors pelted stones, set ablaze at least five buses of the state transport corporation near Kotputali on Jaipur-Delhi Highway and clashed with the police in Dausa, Karauli and Bundi districts as part of their 'chakka-jam' agitation. They were demanding that the Gurjar community be shifted from OBC to Scheduled Tribe category.

Seven persons were killed in Bundi district while six bodies were found from Peelplikheda-Patoli area, about 165 km from Jaipur, along Jaipur-Agra national highway in Dausa and in neighbouring Karauli, Kataria told a press conference.

Another policeman, identified as Deena Ram, was killed in a clash with the agitators in Bundi district, he said, adding that Bundi Collector S S Bissa sustained injuries in the violence.

Six bodies found in Gangapur city, Bayana and Mahua in Dausa and neighbouring Karauli district and seven bodies in Bundi, have been sent for postmortem, Kataria said.

At least 100 people, including 50 police personnel, sustain injuries in the clashes and were admitted to hospitals in Jaipur, Kota, Bundi, Dausa and Karauli and Agra in UP, he said.

Of the injured, four persons with bullet wounds, were admitted to the Sawai Man Singh hospital in the state capital while four policemen injured in clashes were also shifted here in a critical condition.

In a move to stem the protests, Army personnel were moved from Jaipur, Agra and Bharatpur to highways between Jaipur and Agra via Dausa and Bharatpur and between Kota and Jaipur.

Six columns of the Army comprising 600 personnel were rushed in the afternoon from Jaipur to hold flag march on the national highway near Dausa, Kataria said, adding that the Army was also sent from Kota to Bundi. The total figure of Army deployment was not immediately available.
Army was also alerted in Alwar and Bharatpur areas to assist the civilian administration after protestors dug up roads and damaged national highways.

At least five state transport corporation buses were set on fire by angry demonstrators near Kotputali on Jaipur-Delhi highway, an official spokesman said.

Traffic was badly affected on roads linking Jaipur with Agra, Delhi, Kota and Sawai Madhopur and large number of people were stranded at various points.

Police earlier lathicharged, lobbed teargas shells and opened fire in Dausa and Bundi city to disperse the activists belonging to Gurjar Action Committee.

Kataria parried queries with regard to causes of death saying that they would be known only after postmortem.

As the protestors attacked the police force outside Devnarayan Temple and other areas in Bundi, at least 50 policemen were injured, the minister said giving details of the incidents.

Traffic jams were reported from several places in Dausa and Bundi districts.

Protestors also sat on railway tracks in Dausa, Alwar, Bharatpur and Bandikui sections, a North-West Zone Railway spokesman said, adding that the schedule of about a dozen trains was affected.

The Jaipur-Delhi rail route via Bandikui (Dausa district) station was obstructed and the trains were diverted at either ends, the spokesman said.

The Ashram Express, Shatabdi Express, Bareili Express and Motihari-Porbandar Express, besides goods trains on the Ajmer-Kishanganj, Rewari-Alwar and other routes were hit and were being re-scheduled.

"The N-W Zone was planning alternative routes for passenger safety and travel," the spokesman said.

I don't know what the hell they want now. This community is already getting reservation facility. Now they demand to be classified under ST and not in SC. Kya chutiyagiri hai.

The problem is that our government keeps on reducing quota of certain categories like SC, ST and gives more to newly added categories like 'Dalit Muslim' and 'Dalit Christian' (now how come Muslims and Christians are Dalit is beyond me. Maybe BKN, the expert, can shed some light).

So when a ST feels that his reservation privileges are diminishing he will be pissed off. While the governmetn has given him hand outs all his life, he has never taken it upon himself to get out of the quota situation and mentality. So these things happen. Its always been happening since that scoundrel Baba Bhosdekar created this quota business.

I say make 99% reservation or rather make all upper castes as reserved category and give everything else to these 'so called low castes'

Its like this - If you have a servant to wipe your ass after you defecate, and you dont have to pay for the servant's services, then you will never bother to wipe your own ass or learn how to wipe it incase the servant is no longer available. Our wonderful quota folks are so used to getting their aholes wiped and licked clean by the government at the expense of merit class, that any thought that the servant will wipe with one less stroke makes these quota scum writhe in pain and take up arms.

Re: Quota raises ugly head- Rajasthan: 13 killed, 100 injured in violence

I would like to say that quota should be based on the economic status of an individual. economically backward should be given quota. it should not be caste based because most of them are having healthy family income but still they gets beneftis under the quota. they are ultimately occupying the seat of a needy one..what the fu.ck quota is

Re: Quota raises ugly head- Rajasthan: 13 killed, 100 injured in violence

Pre-independence pattern was just reverse…. There was a bhagdar (caution : not bhagandar.. bhagandar bole to piles) among several lower castes and OBCs to be categorized as upper castes…. These castes had also taken up upper caste rituals and lifestyle to move up the hierarchy.... But now a day, there is a trend to move down the social hierarchy in return of prospective material benefits..... Today ritual status has become immaterial...... This may be seen as Dalit-Brahmin grouping in Uttar Pradesh election. Material and existential issues are becoming the over-riding factors..... There is trend….. Jats demanding OBC status though they are higher in the caste ladder….Gujjars demanding ST status though they are gaining the benefits of OBC quota ……

So roj roj ke khich khich karke apna khun jalane se better hoga ki all Brahmin and Rajputs should also sign MOU with their leaders at the time of election (most powerful bargaining condition) that they would raise their voices to recognize them too as ST community…….

Re: Quota raises ugly head- Rajasthan: 13 killed, 100 injured in violence

Now the Meenas tooo kud pade hai road pe kamjor ki lugai (bole to Mohalle ki bhaujai bole to public property) ko chedne ke liye…….There are two categories of Meenas in Rajasthan…….. One is Meenas and other is Bhil-Meenas…… But only Meenas have been classified as ST...... Ab Gujjaro ke andolan se Meenas ko dar lagne laga ki Gujjar aa jaenge then their quota will be divided….. abhi tak akele tar maal jo kha rahe the……aur wo bhi due to intelligency of some bewkuf Government Officers…….

Haaa…….There is an interesting story how the Meenas classified as ST…. Soon after independence, Nehru entrusted M. L. Verma, a senior Congress leader, with the job of identifying the STs in Rajasthan….. Meenas in the districts of Udaipur, Banswara and Dungarpur were economically backward, did not fall into any caste category and living in remote areas, which was the criterea for judging a scheduled tribe……. They are known as Bhil-Meenas.

The Meenas in the districts of Sawaimadhopur, Dausa and Alwar are not only better off, they were the ruling classes of this area…… Consequently, Verma suggested the Central Government to treat the Bhil-Meenas as STs…… But when his suggestion reached Delhi, some intelligent officers of the Government of India felt the hyphen (-) in Bhil-Meena was an error and replaced it by a comma (,), with the result that both Bhils and Meenas were included in the list of scheduled tribes………….. Wah re kismat……

Here it is!!

Gujjar row: Sachin Pilot meets Rajnath Singh

In a desparate bid to end six days old violence which has cut off Rajasthan from rest of the country, Sachin Pilot, congress member of Parliament from Dausa who started the agitation, made a trip to Bharatiya Janata Party office on Sunday evening to meet Rajnath Singh at the party headquarters to discuss the law and order situation.

He is expected to brief Mrs Sonia Gandhi, president of the Indian National Congress, about the contents of the meeting. The entire agitation started when the Gujjar leadership and particularly Sachin Pilot said that under delimitation carried out by the election commission Dausa would become a reserved seat for Schedule Tribe and here he would not be able to contest unless Gujjars get ST status who constitute ten per cent of the India's population.

Talking to newsmen, the young member of Parliament said that efforts are on to defuse the situation so that the people of the state are not put to inconvenience.

In Jaipur a crucial meeting between Colonel K S Bainsla, who is spearheading the movement on the ground level, was expected to meet chief minister Vasaudhara Raje to sort out pratical difficulties.
He had left Dausa in the afternoon and was expected to reach Jaipur by 7 pm. In an interview to a private news channel Colonel Bainsla appealed to his followers to remove the roadblocks so that traffic can be restored.

In the capital the Delhi police is gearing up to meet the bandh call given by the Gujjars on Monday who are converging from neighbouring state to for complete halt to the vehicular traffic and force the shops and establishments to pull down their shutters.

Re: Quota raises ugly head- Rajasthan: 13 killed, 100 injured in violence

The problem goes back to 1999. Gujjars were prominant OBCs in Raj. for years, so they enjoyed reservations assigned to OBCs. But in 1999 Jats were given OBC status (25.4% population of Raj) and Gujjars are no more OBC leaders. On other hand Meenas are only community in Raj to enjoy ST status and they are enjoying it for years. So Gujjars felt that only way to regain their quota status to enter in ST category. BJP allegedly (not in public I think) promised Gujjars to be included in ST category during state election 3.5 years ago. Thats why they are angry and they did not do this over-night. This whole thing was pre-planned and they had an idea of holding govt to ransom.

Re: Quota raises ugly head- Rajasthan: 13 killed, 100 injured in violence

Gujjars were nomads in J & K, Uttarakhand, etc. but in Haryana and Raj, they have been more into agriculture.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/6705521.stm

Guess Madame Raje has managed to handle it well after the initial violence. The "agitation" is over now. The leader of Gujjars seemed to be a sensible guy (he is an ex amry colonel). he regretted the inconveniece caused to Aam Aadmi during this agitation.

One question remains. Have any of the protestors thought that they could improve their chances in jobs/education by actually mugging. Well thats Bharat for us. Probably one day even Brahmins will agitate for SC status!
