IIT-Bombay may get Rs 100 crore aid to form DRDO-like body

By Manash Pratim Gohain, TNN | 25 Jan, 2015, 09.51AM IST

The Centre is likely to grant IIT-Bombay Rs 100 crore to set up a centre of excellence for internal security on the lines of the DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organization).
The Centre is likely to grant IIT-Bombay Rs 100 crore to set up a centre of excellence for internal security on the lines of the DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organization).

NEW DELHI: The country's police forces may soon be armed with a direct supply line of latest technology — such as drones, advanced communication systems and video analytic equipment — as the Centre is likely to grant IIT-Bombay Rs 100 crore to set up a centre of excellence for internal security on the lines of the DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organization).

While the DRDO caters only to the armed forces, the IIT-B centre will cater to the technology requirements of state and central police forces, which include the Central Reserve Police Force, Central Industrial Security Force and Railway Protection Force.

Research at the first such institute for internal security, the National Centre of Excellence in Tehcnology for Internal Security (NCETIS), is already under way and the project has been approved by the ministry of communications and information technology, said IIT-B director Devang V Khakar. "Our action plan is ready and are likely to get Rs 100 crore from the department of electronics and information technology soon," he said.

The centre will also receive funds from other ministries depending on the projects undertaken.

With terrorists increasingly using modern warfare techniques, the NCETIS will set out to supply technologies to improve intelligence gathering, dissemination, crime detection and law enforcement, increase levels of preparedness of forces and reducing the response time in emergency cases.

Sounds like good news. But don't most of the IITians head for "foreign" ?? (or politics)... Is some foreign country outsourcing scientific research

Some comments from the readers about the above article.

is it true ? Has Huawei had an R&D centre in Bengaluru for 15 years now ?

Anyway, another point raised by the readers there .. India has a bad name where IPR are concerned. Let's hope Modi govt. undertakes some confidence building measures in that regard. "Research in India" will be as good as "Make in India".

One of my friends was working in Huawei Bangalore about 2002. They were reputed as good paymasters.

Probably 170 Million is an additional investment now. Not sure how much of quality R & D will come out of it. Apparently, some part of Bangalore office was out of bound for Indians.

Looks they are ramping up big time in Bengaluru.. Huawei has had a bad reputation in US, often thought of as a rogue company controlled by Chinese Govt. that is stealing designs from American companies like Cisco & selling cheaper products, also makes US nervous about spying.

Quote:
John Chambers, the boss of Cisco, an American supplier of network equipment, recently claimed that Huawei does not always “play by the rules” on intellectual property; many in America are convinced that Huawei stole the design of one of its early products from Cisco, though the Chinese company hotly denies this. Cisco settled a lawsuit it had brought against Huawei in 2004 in a way that both sides spun as vindication.

this is what their website says.

Quote:
Set up in 1999 in Bangalore, Huawei Technologies India (HTIPL) is Huawei's first overseas software R&DCentre, engaged in developing cutting-edge software products and platforms. Today, it employs over 2,000 Indian engineers, is the largest and one of the most important R&D Centres of Huawei, and delivers niche products for the international market.
from Deccan Herald:

Quote:
To give further boost to India focus activities, Chinese telecom gear maker Huawei on Thursday unveiled its research and development (R&D) campus in Bengaluru, its biggest outside China, with an investment of $170 million.

Huawei Technologies Vice-President Joy Zoho told Deccan Herald that the centre will help the company to develop world-class products, platforms, and solutions.

“The India R&D facility will help us build world-class platform development, software solutions and develop customer products. It will create future-oriented technologies and support the digital transformation of society. We want to be a global information and communication technology (ICT) solution provider, and for that we need to strengthen our capabilities,” said Zoho.

The campus, spread over 20 acres, can staff 5,000. At present the centre houses 2,700 employees, almost all of whom are Indians.
