Is it advisable to quit work or stay put?
So, hypothetically speaking would you leave work or stay put, if you were in the below position.
You are not happy with your job but you have been here for 10+ years. If you quit and move, you will lose benefits (of that includes any compensation in the likely event there are layoffs). If you dont quit, you are unhappy but at least you have a paycheck and a safety net. A friend wants to know ![]() |

Why not look for another job while earning the paycheck at the current place?

If not, then you have to evaluate whether your paycheck is worth the precious time away from your family? I hear that these days some Canadians are forced to work 60 hours a week ![]()

![]() And to add a few more, You are unhappy but you hardly work. So good compensation for minimum work and come and go as you please. After all those years, lethargy has set good and solid. Do not feel like working hard again, which a new job will require. You are unhappy but you can make others unhappy too. Honest answers only. A friend wants to know ![]()

![]() One can never be 100% happy in any job. Even if you have your own business, there are many situations that make you unhappy.
So stop searching for happiness at a job. No one ever is except maybe the founder who has cashed out and is sitting on his yatch! If you are stuck in a golden cage like stock options which vest 25% each year, then you need to wait out till they vest. If your company stock is stagnant or tanking then those stocks are no better than toilet paper. A good company will offer competitive medical benefits and other benefits like 401K etc. So getting these in a new job is not a big hassle. Other than this, look at what you will lose if you quit and what you will gain. New job means proving yourself all over again, but hey you are getting paid more. New job means losing out on seniority etc but then again you might be jumping up a level or two at the new job. So it all comes down to 'how much in hand' ![]() ![]() Happiness is all over rated in any job. And if your friend cannot think of these simple commonsense things for him/herself then look for a government job ![]() |

You hit the nail on head. I am just wondering if we everyone just talk about being "ok" (happy is highly overrated, I agree) at work but at the end of the day the bacon we bring home dictates the work we do. |

Re: Is it advisable to quit work or stay put?
Nobody is always happy with their job, but the question is - what are you unhappy about? Is it the employer or is it you?
Maybe you are not the right fit for the position, so you and the employer are simply unable to connect. Maybe you are rigid about certain views or have a strong Indian accent that is off-putting to westerners. Listen to what your employer is telling you and try to make some changes in your attitude and approach. Smile at work. Be pleasant to your coworkers, rather than complain. Pick up hobbies outside of work. Work doesn't have to be your life. |

Re: Is it advisable to quit work or stay put?
I can't believe so many people advise to work in less than satisfactory and unhappy circumstances. Money is important to have -- but not the ultimate goal, is it? Does your friend's unhappiness and overall negative experience at work cause issues at home as well?
If it is not going to get better at work, at what point will you/your friend decide that enough is enough?
