Government's outlay for defence in military budget dashes hopes for military modernisation

Inspite of all it's nationalistic talk , the government has not done much to allocate money for defence modernisation.

One really misses Rajiv Gandhi , who was the only prime minister to have really allocated more than 3 percent of the GDP for defence and was really interested in making India a major military power . Rest have paid only lip service to military modernisation and nothing else.

I reckon we should let results speak for themselves.... we all know by now, where did Rajiv's 3% allocation go - military modernisation or italian pockets....

I would hazard an opinion that even with 'reduced' funding, military is doing better now than before.

Ever since bofors scandal, very few 155 mm guns have been bought for army. That is in last thirty years . Rafale jets---only 36 instead of the planned 126 + 56 .

Of course, only the BJP government is not to blame for this . But it's claim to nationalism is diluted because of this . Later congress governments after Rajiv Gandhi also reduced defence expenditure but at least they were not claiming to be nationalists.

to my simple mind - although we spent about 2% + of GDP to defence budget over your beloved government's tenure, we still had nothing new....

now even with reduced defense budget allocation we have managed to get 36 Rafales with a plan for the rest of them to be made in India reducing further outlay for maintainence of them....

its like you had a sexy compounder - easy on the eye and good to look at - but spent only half the time doing compounding duties and the other half smooching her boyfriend.... whereas now perhaps you have a fat middle-aged man - not great to look at - who spends all his time on compounding duties - you are probably paying the middle-aged fatso less, but you are getting more out of him....

Mirage jets and mig jets may seem old now but they were new then . So were the bofors guns whose further additions were stopped by v p Singh.

Real military modernisation and did happen too . Mirage 2000 fighterjets from France.. Mig 29 fighterjets from Russia. Bofors guns from Sweden that proved so useful in the kargil war .

Every year the defence budget disappoints and I remember Rajiv Gandhi. This has been happening for nearly 30 years. And I don't even have a habit of drinking to forget my sorrows....sigh....

Re: Government's outlay for defence in military budget dashes hopes for military modernisation

This budget was expected to be a populist budget with an eye on the many state elections, and being the last full budget. That's what it is. Even the tax paying urban middle class feels shafted. The emphasis of this budget is on rural and BPL class.

Bofors guns were given second ranking in the tests done by army, I think it was french guns that came in first during actual firing tests conducted by the Army in siachen and thar deserts.

Had we had the first ranked gun, we could have had the capability of firing rounds at slightly less than twice the range of bofors. Which means we could have saved more number of soldiers life in Kargil.

As they say, gali gali me shor he, rajiv gandhi chor he.

In the mean while he emptied the treasury which lead to balance of payment issues and culminated in gold from India being sent to london.

Did u analyze the purchases that were made, Mirages from France, Jaguars from UK/French company. The jags were under powered half engineered product which we had to fix and the contract was worded in such a way that we had to share the fix details with out compensation of a single penny from the company. Then the purchase of Mig-23/27 and 29 from USSR. He kept buying things without a plan, the only prime motivation being how much bribe he and his party can collect.

Anyways, please look at the era of 80's from Financial perspective. Our Loans went up from about 10 billion to 40 billion. And what was our growth during that era, a meager 2-3% per anum on an average.

This was the time when the Asian tigers made their economies super strong while pappu ke pitaji was screwing our Industry left and right and collecting bribes directly and through proxies.

Even the IT revolution that con party claims was the giving of pappu's pitaji is a big fake. Computerization of railways was started by the janatha party and finally came online during con party rule.

As i said elsewhere, though he may not have imagined it, george fernandes boosted wipro and HCL by driving away IBM. the electronics city in Bangalore apparently happened during Devraj Urs.

But pappu ke pappa's sidekick sam pitroda did start off somethings like C-Dot and NIC and help in his own way.

The sam pitroda said no when companies wanted to bring car phones in to Metro cities. we could have telecom revolution lot earlier.

The reason that was given against car phones was that it was a luxury.

Its a hangover from the previous Indu Sarkar- cars were a luxury. Phones were a luxury. So obviously carphones will be a luxury.

RG moved slightly towards the markets but did not dismantle the license permit raj.
