Red face Floods in Punjab/Haryana - Army called to help.

Rains bring more tears than cheers to North India

Flash floods leave north India in deep trouble
TNN, Jul 8, 2010, 03.10am IST
CHANDIGARH: Within two days of the first monsoon showers, northern India was reeling under the impact of sharp downpours, with parts of Haryana, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh flooded and arterial highways connecting Delhi to northern towns either blocked by swirling waters or threatened with inundation.

Haryana's Kurukshetra town, 160km from Delhi on the Chandigarh highway and areas in and around Ambala were under knee-deep water. Four columns of Army from the Western Command were deployed at Devigarh on the Punjab-Haryana border near Ambala, which remained without power and drinking water, and in Kurukshetra. While two columns were engaged in plugging a 160-foot breach in the Sutlej-Yamuna link canal, two columns were deployed for rescue missions. The overflowing Ghaggar river had also flooded Punjab's Patiala district.

Some traffic resumed on few of the flooded roads by late Wednesday, but many highways in Himachal remained closed with the threat of floods spreading. The Delhi-Manali National Highway 21, an arterial link into the state, remained closed for the second day after water from the Beas inundated it at many places. The Beas was overflowing at Aut, said Kullu deputy commissioner B M Nanta.

The Manali-Leh Road has been closed since Tuesday after landslides at Rani nalla and Rakshi dank left hundreds of vehicles stranded on both sides of Rohtang pass. Flights to Shimla were cancelled for the third day because of bad weather. Deputy commissioners of districts in HP through which the Beas and Sutlej rivers flow have declared a high alert.

Deputy commissioner Shimla J S Rana said the Sutlej was flowing close to the danger mark at many places while at others it has crossed the danger mark. An alert was sounded in villages along banks of the river and in places villagers had been shifted to safer heights, he added.

In Lahaul, the Koksar valley bridge, a vital link between Manali and Leh, was badly damaged when three oil tankers were crossing the bridge at the same time.

RRBhai ... sad to see misery of people but something about photo you have posted ... do you have more of such photos? I wouldn't be surprised if few short years ago these were small huts in such close proximity to each other separated by a narrow lane. If a picture is worth more than a book ... this photo tells a story of thousand words.

I found it funny that ladder is placed upside down ... do you see what I mean? If steps are nailed ... one loose nail and poor woman drops into the water.

I recall your thread ... Surat floods ... you posted some excellent pics.

Situation in ambala is not good; IAF helicopters are bringing patients from ambala to our cantonment hospital, there is huge loss of livestock as well
Army from ambala, adampur, and udhampur is called in
There is possibility of contagious disease as well

Yes. Another dam on Ghaggar river has developed a breach in Sangrur district? Rail traffic is also disrupted. When the media can reach there so extensively, why not government relief workers ?

The possibility of diseases is always there after natural disasters. Remember the Surat plague scare in 1994? It happened after the floods. Thank God, the government learnt its lessons and in 2006 there was no epidemic. But we all suffered minor ailments like dysentery, fever/ chills etc. The air was bad with accumulated mud of so many days of submersion and it does take time to remove all the mud.

The situation is Punjab seems to be more serious than the one in Surat, because the rural areas too have suffered a lot. So, all the standing crops would be destroyed.

helicopter unit assisting ambala sector has made around more than 100 sorties today. IAF hospitals are almost working with full capacity and various officers are relieved from flight duties today to assist patients.

the rail traffic, road transport are at standstill, news from punjab is that because of bad weather some sorties were canceled in patiala and surrounding area as one of my friends is pilot assiting relief work.

surat flood, i dont remember it i was studying in class 4 in bareilly probably at that time.
but do remember gujrat earthquake of 26 jan 2001, as i was in bhuj, epicentre of eathquake.

okay time to go, update at 2200hrs IST, if possible

Surat flood was in 2006 and that time you were in class 4 and in 2001 you must have been in which standard

Last year people were crying for rain and this year it created havoc in some places.
In Mumbai the lakes have already reached last years levels and with the heavy rains going on like this we could see it over flowing in July itself.

sorry for writing contradictory statements

surat plague 1994, was in class 4

gujrat eathquake 2001 class 10

surat flood 2006, in academy.

operations by IAF are now halted, will be resuming back with the first line of morning, cities are easy to monitor and to carry out operation, dont know what is happening in rural parts of punjab and haryana
