I could be out of a job

The company I have been consulting for is going through SEVERE cash problems. Creditors are at the door. Assets are being sold at distress prices. People are getting sacked left right and centre. I found that my name too is on the "to sack" list, but somewhere down below, in the lower half. I don't know where "the list will stop".

I asked a senior and he said "In three months all will be clear. Just wait." The company too might be sold.

I am scared. Shit scared. I dunno what to do

All ideas welcome.

Re: I could be out of a job

I would float my resume', it takes time to get hired.. sometimes months to find the right job. May be by then the storm blows over.

Float your resume and start looking.
If you can, train yourself in a skill that is high in demand.

I am sorry to hear that. A man of your intellect, you wouldnt have too much issues finding a new job. Just consult a lot of headhunters, update your CV and apply for jobs left right and centre.

Sometimes intellect and qualifications are hurdles for getting a job.

True. Also, hiring folks could see you as a threat. Like, PhDs are often seen as overqualified for jobs, or too theoretical.

Don't be afraid. Just go with the "jo hoga dekha jayega" attitude. Don't run around like a chicken with it's head cut off.

Remember this - in the past, people used to fight in wars, not sure if they were ever coming back home. Men were put in far worse situations, yet took it like a fucking man!

Don't be a fucking wimp! Man up and take it one day at a time. Console the folks around you and your family. Life's not coming to an end.

This is one of my favorite movie dialogues from the movie Wall Street - Man looks in the abyss, there's nothing staring back at him. At that moment, man finds his character. And that is what keeps him out of the abyss.

Re: I could be out of a job

Thanks all of you for your kind and encouraging words. For many many years now I have been working only part-time, and the rest of the time studying various things/riding the hobby horse - call it what you will. I like this lifestyle and want to continue with it.

The idea is this - I would like a part time job only. Not full time (with lesser pay, of course). That might prove to be a hurdle.

Any ideas?

you cant be working in such a specialised job that there is no competition. I am sure looking at your competitors will give you a head start as to where to start looking for work.

Find out where Ramesh Suresh works and try to take his job. He get's a low pay, but it doesn't require lot of expertise.

Not sure if you already do this, but how about using your story writing skills to write up a fiction novel.

Re: I could be out of a job

Do not worry.
1) Create 3 types of resumes - the original with all your brilliance, a mid level with less brilliance and low level which is mediocre.
2) Float the type of resume depending on the job offer
3) Look for jobs on some job portals.

Do not go with pre-condition that you want full time/half time/part time etc. First get the interview, get the job and then see what happens.

All will work out.
