Question If USA asks, should India let USA use its military bases on Pak border?

With the Indian PM offering full support to USA in finding out the people behind these terrorist attacks and Pakistan giving a cold shoulder to US on Osama Bin Laden, should India see this as an opportunity and let USA use its military bases for this purpose.

I know that this would open up a lot of our military secrets, preparedness and procedures to US but will it be a good diplomatic strategy now that India and USA see a common enemy in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

from washington post

...U.S. officials also began high-level meetings with Pakistani officials to insist on their help in tracking the attackers and aiding a retaliatory strike. The Pakistani government has long had close ties with the Taliban movement in Afghanistan that shelters bin Laden. "The message to Pakistan is there's clearly a worldwide momentum right now to stand up and be counted. Whose side are you on on terrorism?" a senior State Department official said ...

Pak is one of the few countries that recognizes Taliban and so Pak is no longer a friend unless it actually proves its friendship in this time of need. If Pak is not helping the US, it is helping the terrorism and so an enemy.

I say that India uses this as an opportunity to get closer to the US and fight with Pakistan under the common agenda of combating terrorism.

is the cost of coming closer to US in handing over our bases (may be i am exhaggerating a bit) to the US justified?

There is one place which India can give USA for some time to use as thier base and it's J&K.

Let's give them kashmir to operate from - close to Pak and close to Afghanistan

Look at it this way:

Pakistan is bina gaand ka lota .

If it can get US to support it, it will denounce Taliban the very next moment.

As far as India is concerned, India should not hand over the bases but should allow them to use it with restricted access to secure places.

This replies your question ?

India has offered all operational help to the United States in the almost inevitable event of Washington mounting a strike against the Ground Zero of terrorism, now widely identified as the area between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The Cabinet Committee on Security met Thursday and unanimously decided to offer all cooperation and facilities for any US military operation in its pursuit of the masterminds of the carnage in New York and Washington.

``There have been contacts at all political, executive and operational levels about this,'' External Affairs minister Jaswant Singh told this correspondent in an interview. Prime Minister Vajpayee had also written to President Bush conveying India's sympathy and offer of cooperation, he added.

Asked if this meant India would agree to provide logistical help or a staging ground for a US military operation, Singh replied with an emphatic ``Yes.'' He declined to go into details of what he described a ``very sensitive matter.''

US ambassador to India Robert Blackwill called on Singh soon after the CCS meeting. Cooperation between the two sides was on top of the agenda. Blackwill, who is yet to present his credentials -- he will do so Friday -- is returning to Washington on Saturday for consultations.

Although India has previously provided operational help to the US military, most recently during the Gulf War, the latest offer comes amid a dramatic slide in US-Pakistan relations. It virtually eclipses Pakistan's long-standing status as a US ally in the region.

There is little likelihood Washington will accept any logistical help from Pakistan given what some believe the fundamentalisation of what was once a highly professional army. The last time the US mounted a Cruise missile attack against Osama bin Laden, Islamabad was left out of the loop and only informed at the last minute to preclude any misunderstanding that missiles are being launched by India.

Meanwhile, it is now almost certain that the UN special session is being postponed and a scaled down UN General Assembly meeting may take place some time later. Which means that the scheduled Vajpayee-Musharraf meeting will also be scrubbed.

It is uncertain if Vajpayee will go for the scaled-down session. He will make the journey only if there is an emphasis on the scourge of global terrorism or if the US decides to proceed with plans for meeting of democracies that was in the works before the sky rained death in New York.

Post here is my take

First of all, during GUlf War, India had allowed two US air force planes to land and re-fuel in India. That was a gesture of good will and it has served us good in a diplomatic way.

Second, USA has made overtures to India ven before the attacks on USA. We should take full advanatage of this situation and extend help to USA in their time of need.

We are not offering neither is USA asking that they make US air force bases on Indian soil. it would for the time being.

If we help USA now by giving strategic and logistic support or any militray operation then it will be good for us in our fight against terrorism.
