We have our own oil spill at JNPT port in Mumbai

Two ships collided, and we have a oil spill!!

Oil leak off Mumbai coast plugged: Coast guard
Published: Monday, Aug 9, 2010, 20:57 IST
Place: Mumbai | Agency: PTI

The oil spill from Panamanian ship MSC Chitra, which ran aground off Mumbai harbour after Saturday's collision with another vessel, has stopped, the coast guard said today.

"The leakage of oil from the ship has stopped on its own," SPS Basra, IG coast guard (western region) told PTI.

"It is observed that in the last six hours, the fuel from the ship tank has stopped coming out. So, it is a relief kind of a thing," Basra said.

Oil was leaking from two of the 12 tanks of the vessel which had got damaged due to the collision. The two tanks could together hold 879 tonnes of oil, sources in the coast guard said.

The ship contained around 2,600 tonne oil of which 500 tonne is believed to have leaked into the Arabian sea, threatening marine life and ecology along the Mumbai coastline.

Two Panamanian cargo ships -- MSC Chitra and MV Khalijia-111 -- collided on Saturday off the Mumbai coast causing an oil spill from one of the vessels.

Thirty three crew members, including two Pakistanis, were rescued following the incident.

The navy and the coast guards carried out anti-pollution operations for the third consecutive day today to check and neutralise the oil spill.

They say the tehsildars of the villages along the coast are going to check for the severity of oil leaks by looking at glasses of water collected from the sea. wow, what a professional approach!

As per NDTV reports, the fishermen have been asked to not fish till further notice. This will make fish very hard if not impossible to get in the market. This will also mean a windfall for chicken and mutton shops as prices will skyrocket.

You know that might be the right way to test for oil content, seriously! Even the mighty BP could not judge the oil spill content easily. Maybe our tehsildars will provide a breakthrough

Talking Re: We have our own oil spill at JNPT port in Mumbai

Wow (Saif style), hey wow maaaaaaan.. Mumbai now has its own OIL SPILL.. cool!!

Now that's a great business opportunity, right? You want to purify the BMC's water of oil? Here are the oil-removing tablets. Just throw a bunch of pills in your matka, and you have water pure like amrit.

Here are some oil-spill T-shirts for you, just Rs. 200 for a set of 4.. hurry, all your neighbours bought one.

How about a charity dinner for the oil-spill affected? We will make it bigger than the navy ball.

and some street theatre, and I've heard that 3 film producers have declared a movie based on it.. Shares of pharma companies are shooting up higher than the swine flu times.. That time only face masks were hot, today it is pills of all kinds.

Swadeshi people are asking the mumbaikar to boycott the foreign oil. Raj is blaming the Biharis for it. ATS is wondering if it is a Pakistani conspiracy. Bhaiyas say that it is a MNS strategy to push them into the sea. The CM has asked the center for Rs. 10000 crore aid.

The rescue workers are busy preventing/ minimizing the damage, their officers are busy collecting commissions from the equipment manufacturing companies and medals from the ministers.

BTW, the administration has asked the citizens not to consume fish for some time till declared safe.. great opportunity for better haftas from the Kolis

Updates ... 10 ships have sunk so far.

Quote:
Mumbai port in the dock

10 ships have sunk in the last 13 years

By: J Dey Date: 2010-08-10 Place: Mumbai

Ten ships, including a few offshore supply vessels, have sunk near Mumbai harbour in the past 13 years, making the channel a graveyard of ships. The debris of the sunken vessels are already posing a threat to ships and fishing boats.

Apart from that, more than 30 stranded offshore supply vessels (OSV) continue to pose a major threat to lives of seafarers.

Rusty buckets
The 30-odd vessels have been reduced to rusted buckets after they were anchored in Mumbai harbour since July 2007.

They have been found unfit for sailing soon after a survey conducted by the Director General of Shipping.
DG shipping conducted a survey after the sinking of offshore vessel SAM10 near Bombay High in July 2007. Most of the ships did not conform to the specifications laid by Indian Register of Shipping, an apex governing body for shipping in the country.

While some of the ships are anchored near Ferry Wharf, a majority of them are pitching and rolling in the rough seas in the main navigation channel leading to the harbour.

Some of the supply vessels are anchored along the route to Mora, Karanja and Rewas across Mumbai harbour. These ships are a threat to local fishermen, particularly after nightfall.

The rust that emits from these ships is creating an ecological threat to the marine fauna in the region. And authorities have done nothing to tackle this threat so far.
