Post Danny Boyle to return to Mumbai for next venture

Slumdog director Danny Boyle may return to Mumbai for another film

Kamathipura, the red-light area in Mumbai, where Danny Boyle has in mind a thriller set largely at night, when a few people share the terrain with packs of dogs

Danny Boyle, the Oscar-winning director of Slumdog Millionaire, may return to work in Mumbai after acquiring the film rights to another book set in the vast shantytowns of the city.

He is understood to have bought the rights to the critically acclaimed Maximum City: Bombay Lost and Found by Suketu Mehta, an Indian-born New York-based journalist and author.

The book, which was first published in 2004 and is part travelogue, part autobiography, delves into the interconnected worlds of Mumbai’s slum-dwellers, dancing girls, underworld dons and hard-right Hindu radicals.

Bedazzled reviewers likened the nonfiction work to everything from Balzac’s descriptions of Paris to The Arabian Nights.

Describing the filming of Slumdog Millionaire in the slums of Mumbai, Boyle said last year that Maximum City “became my bible, really. I took it with me everywhere.”

The British director said in January at the Indian premiere of Slumdog in Mumbai that he would love to direct another project in India’s financial capital. He added that he had in mind a modern thriller set largely at night, when the few people wandering Mumbai’s streets share the murky terrain with packs of feral dogs.

Mehta told The Times: “I’m afraid I can’t comment on the story yet — officially.” Boyle’s agent did not respond to telephone calls nor reply to e-mails.

Slumdog Millionaire was also based on an Indian-authored book, the novel Q&A by Vikas Swarup, an Indian diplomat. The film, made for 15 million, went on to take $353 million (220 million) at the box office and became the darling of the festival circuit, winning eight Oscars.

Its unexpected success — until weeks before its release in cinemas Slumdog had seemed destined to go straight to DVD — has whetted Hollywood’s interest in all things Indian.

Paul Schrader, the Hollywood screenwriter whose credits include Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, is working with an Indian producer for his next project, Xtrme City, another thriller set in Mumbai.

A spokeswoman for Mickey Rourke said recently that the actor, who earned critical acclaim for his comeback in The Wrestler, was considering a lead role in Broken Horses, a gangster film that will be the first English-language project for the successful Indian director Vidhu Vinod Chopra.

The acquisition of the film rights for Maximum City will not necessarily assure its progress to the screen. Other mooted book adaptations set in India have stalled — most notably the filming of the bestselling novel Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts, an Australian bank robber and heroin addict who escaped from prison in his home country and fled to the subcontinent.

Johnny Depp enjoyed the novel, which is partly based on the author’s life, so much that he persuaded Warner Bros, the Hollywood studio, to pay Roberts $2 million for the film rights. The actor’s enthusiasm for India has since cooled — reportedly after he heard of the troubles encountered by Angelina Jolie when she made A Mighty Heart in Mumbai.

The film garnered headlines in the local press over allegations that Jolie’s bodyguards threatened a journalist with a gun and manhandled members of the public before fleeing the country to avoid possible criminal charges.

Slumdog also courted controversy amid allegations that two child actors who were plucked from the slums to star in the film were not fairly treated. Mr Boyle is buying each one a flat.

Re: Danny Boyle to return to Mumbai for next venture

Did you notice that this book is about 'hard-right Hindu radicals' too!

First Danny Boyle created poverty porn which showed how Muslims are always persecuted by Hindus in India.

Now one more film with the same negative shades for Hindus! Offcourse this film too will win an Oscar and we will be magnanimous and applaud.

More Garibi shown, more slums add on to Congress Party's fire Power.

3 generations of Gandhi family service in Garibi Hatao. India was starting to get a little respect between 1998-2006. Now we are ourselves marketing us as true Slum Dogs.

We have a fascinationof being garib.

So many bad things happening in my home town Detroit this year. First the housing mess, the auto sales meltdown, then the Chrysler bankruptcy, now the GM bankruptcy. No end in sight for the bad news. If only the motherfucking people of India had elected the BJP, all these problems would have disappeared.

Also Indian form of capitalism has reduced poverty contrary to the vicious propaganda mission by the West. Have you read the book by Surjit Bhalla "Imagine There's No country"?
