Naxal Encounter: Blood sprayed on me as Naxals shot cops

Naxals resorting to Paki Terrorist-type Actions?
Cops' bodies mutilated and booby-trapped with grenades!

10-yr Survivor: ‘Blood sprayed on me as Naxals shot cops'

3 Feb 2009, 0429 hrs IST, Mazhar Ali, TNN

MARKEGAON (GADCHIROLI): “Blood sprayed on me from the bodies of cops as they got hit by Naxal bullets. The cops retaliated bravely but were
overpowered by the Naxalites. They laid down their lives but kept us pinned to the ground to save us from the raining bullets,” said Ankush (name changed), a 10-year-old boy from Markegaon village who, along with his grandfather, was caught in the crossfire between the Naxals and the cops that claimed the lives of 15 cops in Gadchiroli on Sunday.

There were blood stains all over the battleground. Bullet shells and a handful of unexploded hand grenades were found lying all over a field partially covered with vegetation. The land near Ankush’s hut caused goose-pimples. Four cops were killed there. It looked like a butcher house with blood splattered all over.

“As soon as the police party entered the fields, some 200 metres from the village, Naxalites hiding in the jungle began firing indiscriminately. The cops weren’t well-armed. They ran towards the vegetation but many fell to the Naxalite bullets. Four policemen took refuge in our hut. They asked us to lie flat on the ground to save us from the bullets flying around. Later, the Naxalites surrounded our hut and killed the cops,” said Ankush, who witnessed the bloodshed.

“There was one other jawan who crawled into the compound of our hut and fired back at the attackers from our washing place, but he too was gunned down soon,” said the boy whose hut is on the family farm.

“After killing the cops, they spared us and asked us to run to the village. The others were busy taking control of the bodies,” said Ankush. He added that there were many Naxalites and hence he could not count them.

Village Markegaon, around 75 km from Gadchiroli and close to Chhattisgarh-Maharashtra border remained shocked. “Bullets rained over our roof even though the encounter took place at quite a distance. Villagers took refuge in their homes. The firing began at around 10.45 am and continued for next three hours. A few blasts could also be heard while the encounter was underway. Villagers ventured out of their homes only after other police parties reached the village,” said a villager recounting the 01/02 tragedy.

A cop present in the police party that removed the dead bodies to Gadchiroli narrated more horrifying tales. “Many bodies of the cops were mutilated. Some had their eyes pierced, while others had hands or legs chopped. Live grenades were hidden under the bodies,” said he. The cops could notice that and took measures to ensure that the grenades were defused.

seems like there is some connection with paki terror groups and naxals now. They are mutilating bodies of their victims and are booby-trapping them with live grenades to cause more damages to rescue teams.

Re: Naxal Encounter: Blood sprayed on me as Naxals shot cops

corrected it, chapai!

As for the topic, these cops deserve our salute! RIP to them.

As usual all we can do is rant about how the govt. has not improved the equipment of our police and paramilitary forces. Army has a huge change in the gear. Police forces need to get better training!

What the f*ck happened to COBRA force that was supposed to be raised as an special anti-naxal force? Where are the central IR (India Reserve) battalions?

Re: Naxal Encounter: Blood sprayed on me as Naxals shot cops

Some details of the aftermath:

Quote:
Naxal attack: Over 5,000 turn out for cops’ funeral

3 Feb 2009, 0239 hrs IST,
Sunil Warrier, TNN

GADCHIROLI: Gadchiroli was inconsolable on Monday. A day after 15 policemen were gunned down by Naxals near here, the township gathered at the
police grounds to pay homage to the departed. Tears formed cakes on the cheeks, some fainted and others managed a gutsy, emotionless face. If chief minister Ashok Chavan's lip service made any difference, it didn't show.

The crowd had started assembling at the ground from noon. About 5,000 sobbing men and women far outnumbered the men in khaki and green, most of whom had been sent on a combing operation into the forests where the gory incident took place on Sunday morning.

With all establishments closed for the day, as a mark of respect the policemen, Chavan and some of his cabinet colleagues were assured of a good audience. He landed at about 3 pm by a helicopter from Nagpur. Chopper, did one say? The Anti-Naxal Organisation has been fighting for a chopper to help in combing and fighting operations in the forests. One landed last year but could not take off. Now, the only blades they see are the ones on the fan in their dormitories. And, yes, Chavan did say that Rs 330 crore has been spent on fighting Naxalism in the last year and another Rs 1300 crore has been earmarked for the next three years.

Had the money been spent to armour the state cops better, Chavan wouldn't have been in Gadchiroli on Monday.

Some 26/11 heroes were decorated with Padma awards. 01/02 cops deserve nothing short of the Bharat Ratna, commented a face in olive green.

The crowd was on its feet when the bodies were brought in a coffin and placed ceremoniously in the centre of the ground. Most gave it a stiff salute. The rest said a silent prayer. There were moist eyes in every corner of the ground, be it relatives' pandal or the security that had conspicuously wrapped itself around the ground.

A group of cops fired thrice in the air. Was that the 21-gun salute? It did not matter. The Gadchiroli martyrs were given full state honours. Most were from Gadchiroli itself. While the PSI Upendra Guladekar was from Amravati, two others were from Hingoli and Nanded, where the CM hails from. Chavan and a few others in starched white clothes also offered floral tributes.

Gadchiroli is considered a punishment posting for obvious reasons. Cops admit that mortality rate is quite low here. If Naxals don't target you, the mines planted them will.

At 43, Duryodhan Halami was the oldest of the 01/02 lot. He is survived by wife Sushma and two kids - a boy and girl. At 24, Madhav Pote was the youngest. He was unmarried but have old parents in his Hingoli home. The kin of both want an answer from the Naxals: Why him?

The CM went into a huddle with the grieving relatives. Did a tear escape his eyes? Difficult to say as the meeting took place behind closed doors. He has promised the moon to them. Hopefully, it will be delivered without the cosmetic gift-wrap.

Hopefully, the CM will not have to come to Gadchiroli again!

Duryodhan "Halami"....doesnt sound like a correct name?? something wrong with TOI as usual....
It is getting worse day by day-the naxal problem- though thanks to CRPF battalions my place is much safer now.

Re: Naxal Encounter: Blood sprayed on me as Naxals shot cops

Naxal Problem is along the eastern border of India and is in final phases. These are acts of Desperation as they have offered to talks in Chattisgarh after 2nd term for Raman Singh Govt was secured by BJP. They have to do something some where to remain relevant. Maharshtra is a soft target. As Orisaa and Chattisgarh have tightened the screws.

Maoists are ruling over Nepal and enjoying more than normal politicians .
LTTE is defeated in Lanka and Indian states of Orissa and Chattisgarh and A.P fighting hard against Maoists. All these moments are linked though appearing separate. They were all genuine grievances when started but later on Hijacked by leadership who were converted christians with hindu names.Idea is to carve out a Christian state along Eastern order of India upto Srilanka.

Shivraj patil did a great job and all state govts helped him in controlling this menace. Hopefuly Indian public would understand their designs.

Agree with you on some of the points.

Orissa, Chattisgarh and AP have got quite a few successes against naxals. Most of this can be attributed to joint operations involving AP Greyhounds, Orrisa Police SoG and Chattisgarh police and chasing these naxals across the state borders. The police agencies in these states have to be commended for coming together. Besides, the recently established COBRA force will come into play in the next year and that should put the final noose around the naxal problem! Ofcourse all this remains fantasy if the new govt that comes into power later this year makes a turn around in policy!

Re: Naxal Encounter: Blood sprayed on me as Naxals shot cops

Don't worry Ramesh Pai If NDA comes it will definitely follow what Shivraj Patil started.Shivraj patil thogh appeared a failure against stopping blasts for obvious reasons under pressure of Madame Gandhi but did a great job in handling Naxals.

The way he has exposed the links between missionaries and Naxals in Orissa in Laksmanand murder case is going to be turning point in fight against Naxals.

The irony of India is those who divide Hindus on basis of Aryan/Dravidian are mainly converted christians themselves hiding behind Hindu names dividing them, keeping them involved in Armed struggle, keeping them backward and retrograde.

Karunandihi the great Dravadian Champion will never explain how come Hanuman a Dravidian and a Sheduled Tribe is the most worshipped God in India ,many times more than Rama. He is worshipped by even Brahmins too

Unhappy Re: Naxal Encounter: Blood sprayed on me as Naxals shot cops

How come NO Naxalite is reported dead?
One report NOW says the Naxals WAITED till the police 'exhausted' their bullets!
Moreover, the Naxals 'took' away the automatic guns that the patrol party was carrying!

There's something fishy up there!
After all, it'a a 'punishment' post, so 'bad'(read corrupt, inefficient) police are posted there.
-----Is it possible that some 'arms for money' deal went sour and SO the massacre?

I,m sorry, but given the 'hard earned reputation' of our policemen, this is a more distinct possibility.
