There are 108 beads in a Mala. 108 mandalas in Rigveda. Many many other significant things pertaining to 108.

I reckon its less to do with religion than practicality. before decimal system came around duodecimal system was prevalent in India. This number system used base as 12. you will find a lot of numbers which are factors of 12 in use for various traditions.
