Exclamation Don't compare India with Pak: IPL chief Modi

Don't compare India with Pak: IPL chief Modi
Our cricket crazy nation and cricket board officials are all set to enjoy some cricket in the coming months. I just hope and pray that nothing untoward happens. I hope Modi is correct when he asserts that we are a safe nation to play international cricket.

(IPL would responsible for players' security, says IPL chief Lalit Modi. (Times Now))

Don't compare India with Pak: IPL chief Modi
10 Mar 2009, 1809 hrs IST,REUTERS
MUMBAI: The chairman of India's popular Twenty20 league has dismissed security fears ahead of the second edition of the tournament, insisting it was wrong to compare the situation in India to Pakistan.

"We are a very safe country. You are sitting here, I am sitting here, we all are sitting here... We are not Pakistan. I really see no concern," Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman Lalit Modi told reporters on Tuesday.

Security concerns around a tournament that attracts a large number of leading international players had intensified following last week's attack on the Sri Lanka team bus in Lahore, Pakistan, which left six players and a coach wounded and eight people dead.

"Let's not liken the situation in another country to be the same as our country," Modi, also a vice-president of the Indian cricket board (BCCI) said, as he unveiled plans for the tournament starting on April 10.

"After the Mumbai blasts, we still had games in Chennai (and Mohali)," he added of the two tests played by England, who resumed their aborted tour in December after receiving security assurances following the killing of 179 people in November's attacks.

Despite media reports suggesting international players had reservations about travelling to India, Modi said not one had officially voiced security fears and that all contracted players available would be taking part. The IPL chairman, however, said security would be beefed up as a precautionary measure.

"In terms of what that security plan is, it is a very cumbersome template. We did the exercise after the Mumbai blasts, for the Chennai match against England," he said.

"We had a rigorous plan put in place, contingency plan put in place, which was shared both with the security forces, government and the international board... and implemented them without a hitch. "We are now taking that as a safe template and applying that to every city that we are going to host matches --- that's why our security budget has gone up by 10 times."

Red face Re: Don't compare India with Pak: IPL chief Modi

I just hope that in the chase of more money, there are no compromises on security.
Quote:
IPL revenue up by Rs 1,725 cr, set to earn Rs 10,790 cr

Mumbai: The Indian Premier League will take full responsibility for a centrally-managed security set-up for the second edition of its high-profile Twenty20 league which will cost 10 times more than last year.
IPL chairman Lalit Modi said on Tuesday that the security of players, officials and fans will no longer be left to the individual franchises as was the case last year.

"Security is paramount for us. Players, officials and fans are all very important. Players' security was the responsibility of the teams last year but this time we have gone venue by venue managing the security centrally. Of course we will coordinate with the teams," Modi said at a function to unveil the new logo for IPL second season that starts April 10.

Ahmedabad and Visakhapatnam are the two new venues added to the second season and Modi said talks were also on to get Nagpur and Dharamshala on the the roster. But he didn't give out the much-awaited schedule, saying it was still being fine-tuned.

"We are talking to Dharamshala and Nagpur is also in fray. Schedule is still being fine-tuned as I speak," he said.

Elaborating on the security plan, Modi said, "From the minute a (foreign) player lands here to the minute he leaves India. From the minute an Indian player enters the hotel to the minute he leaves, we will be managing the security."
"It's a cumbersome template that was used during the India-England Test series last year. That was a rigorous plan put in place, shared with the Government and the international board, in that case the England and Wales Cricket Board," Modi added.

"Security (budget) will be 10 times more than last year," he said without divulging the exact figure.

IPL's security has become a major issue after the Lahore Terror attack on the Sri Lankan cricketers, six of whom were injured, and last year's Mumbai carnage.

Asked about the reported apprehensions of foreign players and the host state governments, Modi said, "Three state governments (of the eight involved) have already given us their clearance in writing. The other five are expected to give it in a day or so. One state government had asked for a change of date and we are working it out."

"No foreign player has so far contacted the IPL to say that he is apprehensive. They have never been uncomfortable about coming here. India is not Pakistan, we are a safe country," he said.

Modi also rejected the Federation of International Cricketers Association's demands for a say in the security arrangements for IPL.
"The IPL is conducted by BCCI and the BCCI talks directly to the Boards. We have never been in touch with FICA. But of course they will talk to the other Boards and coordinate with them," he said.

The opening and closing ceremonies as well as the inaugural and summit ties of the April 10-May 24 event would be held at the D Y Patil Stadium in Nerul, Navi Mumbai.

Modi revealed that Chennai, home to last year's semi-finalists Chennai Super Kings, will not get to host all seven of its planned games.

"There are a few blackout dates involved because of the elections. So they will not be hosting all seven of their matches," he said.

Modi said tenders have been floated for multiplexes vying to show live telecast of the IPL matches but with a clause. "If Mumbai is hosting a match, then the multiplexes there cannot show that match on that day, they will have to show the match going on in some other city," he said.

Modi also made it clear that the IPL Governing Council had decided not to allow the Twenty20 League to be used for political campaigns by any party for the Lok Sabha polls.
Modi said the confirmed contracted revenue for the second edition of the IPL has gone up by Rs 1,725 crore. "Now it's Rs 10,790 crore. Two official partner slots are still open. We are in talks and are close to signing up one of them", he said.

It is risky but first time Private Security Power and Potential will be tested.
A great opportunity for US/Israel/UK based Private Security firms to collaborate with Indian counterparts.

Not a smart move!!! esp when elections are scheduled at the same time. BCCI is really showing short sightedness. The losses will be far greater than the gains if an attack happens

It is not short sightedness it is called haste.
Read somewhere that BCCI will loose more than 1000 Cr if IPL dose't start when it is supposed to.
Well India is not Pakistan and I am sure, security will be good. I just hope there is no harm to any players. Or else this will be end of cricket played in Asia.

Re: Don't compare India with Pak: IPL chief Modi

BCCI can cushion up any losses due to the IPL loss. they'll make up for it in the next edition and regular cricket tours. I think this is a very bad move. Even though India is not pukistan, terrorists have attacked us at will and massacred.

I think security from now on from matches will be imposing. I just doubt that kind of security can be provided this IPL edition with elections at the same time......

Why?
Why do you believe we can't do something without US/UK/Israel help?

Re: Don't compare India with Pak: IPL chief Modi

I personally hope that that are some grand terrorist attacks during IPL and some big-time cricketeers are killed. So many terrorist attacks have not awakened the half-dead rulers of our country... even a attack on 5-star hotels had just stirred them and they promptly went back to sleep. It is time they are given a heavy jolt... or drenched by a bucket of cold water.

At least if IPL is blasted out, the cricket-frenzied crowds of our country might take a hand in the happenings... especially when they realize that there won't be any more cricket in India... or elsewhere in the world (if the terrorists know which side their bread is buttered).

IPL Security budget is increased 10 times. Obviously it will be private Security. Indian Private Security firms are lacking behind. Good opportunity for them to learn from their western counterparts and excel in it.

what makes you think that by the death of a few big cricketers wlll make us change course? you are underestimating the hijrapana of our janta/politicians... only differance will be cricket in asia will be dead for some time.. loss in revenue. if that happens it's a lose lose situation.

we as a nation lack any self respect/pride, no amount of terror attacks will change that

Agreed with you.. but atleast don't laugh at them ... what you can expect from them ..those ppl mostly within range of 18 to 35 are mearly getting 1500 to 2000 rs salary.. what u expect frm them.. I am sure if you provide them better salary atleast 4000 rs or above.. they will ready to die for country ..
I have seen many security guards at my college gate ... they are having problems but they do their duties not like our politians who are wasting crores by not present in session.
I totally agree with Randheer .. we have good, energetic, hardworking manpower in world ..but what we are lacking is will and proper management.. atleast this time let these ppl work with Uk/US counterparts.. learn things and from next seesion ... we will not be totally dependent on them..
