India and FIFA world cup

I am not interested in watching FIFA world cup because India are not participating. They are ranked #97 in FIFA rankings which is not so bad. Saudi Arabia which is ranked 67 has qualified and is playing in world cup.

I am wondering if we will ever see India playing in world cup. I am sure it won't happen with current level of interest in the sport. People will have to divert their attention from cricket which at this point does not seem likely.

Same for me except that I don't follow group games.

Re: India and FIFA world cup

I fully followed 1990 and 1994 world cups. Plus watched 2002 final in 'Vijay sports bar' in Chola Sheraton in Chennault. All the desis were rooting for Brazil but few firangs presumably Germans we're rooting for Germany.

You can't expect it now, but in 1990, the cameras did a close up on a topless fan and we saw it right on DD. it was the Brazil vs Argentina semi final match.
The winning goal from that

FIFA 1990 was widely telecast in India. One Bong was saying that after this telecast and watching the level of games, many bongs stopped watching East Bengal and Mihan Bagan games. These clubs had to get African players to up their game.

Whatever be the countries playing, it is a treat to watch soccer, which is why it is popular.
Haven't started on Russia 2019, but will do so soon.

Re: India and FIFA world cup

Problem with world cup qualifiers is that all teams have to play it. It is not that top ranked teams are exempted. Even strong teams like Brazil , Germany have to go through the same process.

So unless India become strong like them, they won't qualify. India were placed in a group with Iran in first qualification round who are very very strong and are currently playing the world cup. India ended up losing to them 3-0.
After coming out with that round, all teams are required to play final qualification round where teams like Brazil, Germany will be there. No chance in hell !
