That might be about the extent of Anna Hazare's influence.

OK. There's one more thing. He's gotten people out to protest. Middle-class people never go out to protest in this country. So that counts as an achievement.

The criminal justice system is totally broken here. All investigators need to do is collect evidence and use a good lawyer to argue the case before the judge. It's not exactly rocket science. But this is not happening. Hasn't happened in 60 years.

Netajis interfere in investigations, and investigators are not allowed to collect evidence or pursue cases vigorously.

Law and order is a state subject. If any Chief Minister — Congress-wallah or BJP-wallah or anyone else — wants to fix the criminal justice system, he can do so in his state. I don't see that happening in any state. At the Centre, the CBI is ineffectual.

There are cases against Mulayam, Lalu, Jayalalitha, Yeddyurappa, etc. They will drag on for the next half century. Nothing much will happen.

Merely creating a new institution will bring about signicant improvement in this situation?

Somehow, I doubt it.

If they are unwilling to make it work now, why assume it will work with a new institution?
