i have a hp laptop with windows vista on it.
since last few days, the keys - control, shift, alt and fn - have not been working. f1, f2 etc function keys are doing ok. i restarted the laptop, but nope. i looked up over the net, but nope. someone said some new program or windows update might have screwed it up. some say its a 'system issue' ![]() any ideas?

Re: CTRL, ALT, FN, SHIFT - not working
Laptop hai na.. it has provision for external keyboard? Most of them do. If possible try it, just to check that whether the problem is with your software installation or keyboard.
what I would do is try some odd old fashioned tricks : e.g. a) to check ctrl key, I would see if Ctrl+C is working. To do so, I would give a dos command like and check if ctrl+c is working.. maybe "ping www.echarcha.com -t" and see if ^C is working. b) to check the alt key, in ms word or other word processor, check if you can type using the alt key e.g. alt+065 is A, alt+066 is B |

Re: CTRL, ALT, FN, SHIFT - not working
I am having problem with most of my electronic things for the past few days.My laptop started giving me problem sent it to service center and will be getting it tomorrow after 12 days.
Meanwhile I had an old IBM laptop lying with me thought to use it till I get mine repaired, luckily the laptop is working and I am using it but I am having problem with the Fn key,in simple terms its not working and external keyboards dont have Fn key, is there anyway that I can make use of the Fn key so that I can control brightness and other features of the laptop which requires using the Fn key. Sorry did not google about it ![]()
