Metro Project existing and proposed lines

A few days ago, the Government of the State of Maharashtra finally approved the construction of the first phase of the Mumbai Metro.
The Metro project has been bagged by a consortium led by Reliance Energy Limited (Anil Ambani).
The existing suburban system if for all intents and purposes a metro. but it is over-burdened and the new lines will add desperately need east-west linkages in the fast growing suburbs and also new alignments. should reduce the load on the existing system.

i think they should first spend people's money on strengthening the country's basic infrastructure first. and of course, pay more attention to illiteracy, family planning and poverty... did they seek taxpayer consent before deciding to spend 2000 cr. rupees on this? have people thought of the impact it will have on mumbaikars' lives from now until 2021 (estimated yr of completion)??

lawgirl, a metro rail project will be 'adding to the infrastructure'.

However, I dont have confidence in our companies who will build this system; not because we lack engineering expertise, but because there is bound to be some sort of corruption which will mean inferior quality of work.

When I last visited Mumbai in 2004, I was surprised that many of the concrete roads in Mumbai looked like 100 years old. Now, they blame it on heavy traffic, but concrete/asphalt roads built elsewhere in the world do stand the rigours of heavy traffic.

About family planning and all that? Ha.. no politician worth his salt will ever advocate that. No one wants to lose a burgeoning vote bank.

I am sure this Project will be successful Sunit and the quality of work will also be Awesome, Case in Point, The Delhi Metro Project.. It has achieved ISO 14001 certification since the beginning of it's construction..
If Delhi can boast of a World Class Mass Rapid Transit System despite all the babudom and corruption, Mumbai can also improve on it's existing infrastructure...

few things to think about...

the fact that there is elected govt. in maharastra itself means they have consent of the people. this is not about you, lawgirl, but in general, just because educated people dont vote and then whine about bad governance, doesnt mean the govt. has no consent! educated people in India need to start voting. more than 80% of them dont vote. they dont participate in democracy but want good governance! they dont form political action group and submit their proposals/recomendations to the elected. When you dont do any of this, how can you expect the politician to be answerable to you?
