It cant really be called independence struggle. He was defending his kingdom from the British. Like the Sikhs were in 1837 or so.
BTW one frigate in Pakistan is called PNS Tippu.

There were some freedom fighters from the South like this one. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alluri_Sitarama_Raju
But not many elsewhere in the country know about them.
Plus in Madras, Annadurai and co were fighting for a separate Dravida nadu.
