Nagpur shuts down on arrest of corporators
Mumbai, June 7
Political parties Thursday forced a shutdown of schools, businesses and transport in Nagpur after two-thirds of the city's lawmakers were arrested on allegations of graft, police said.

The acting mayor, two former mayors and 73 other members of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation were arrested on Wednesday and put into police custody until July 11.

"There is a shutdown in the city but the situation is
peaceful and the police force is out in strength," a police spokesman told AFP in Mumbai.

The arrests came after an official investigation unearthed a 23 million rupee (489,000 dollar) scandal involving the purchase of sports goods.

Wednesday's arrests bring the total number of Nagpur lawmakers arrested so far in connection with the scandal to 89, out of a total in the city of 134.

Most of those arrested belong to the BJP.

The invesitigation panel alleged that the arrested lawmakers put in fake bills and receipts for sports goods which were never purchased.

Soon after Wednesday's arrests, supporters of the lawmakers pelted shops and commercial establishments in the city 600 kilometres east ofhere with stones.
