Indian IMAX theatre : largest screen in the world

MUMBAI: India's first IMAX theatre was inaugurated here at Wadala on Sunday evening by chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh. The dome-shaped theatre with a seating capacity of 520 has the world's biggest screen, measuring 13,700 square feet. The IMAX projector is the most advanced projection system in the world and uses the largest film frame in motion picture history, along with 12,000 watts of digital wraparound sound.

The film is projected on the insides of the dome, creating a 3D effect. Speaking on the occasion, Manmohan Shetty of Adlabs Films Limited, promoters of the IMAX theatre, requested that the government provide single window clearance for theatre licences. He also requested the authorities to permit autorickshaws to ply up to the theatre at Bhakti Park, which is at a remote location off the Eastern Express Highway.

Mr Deshmukh said that the IMAX theatre would become Mumbai's latest tourist spot and that he would consider the proposals put forward by Mr Shetty. Deputy chief minister Chhagan Bhujbal, who also spoke on the occasion, said that the government was in a fix about what kind of licence to grant to this unique theatre.

The inaugural show was attended by the who's who of film industry. Prominent among the invitees were Sunil Dutt, Ramesh Sippy, Govind Nihalani, Subash Ghai and Kundan Shah.
