BANGALORE: After almost a six-month delay, the second technology
demonstration flight of the country's indigenious Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) to
test the fighter at supersonic speed levels was successfuly completed here on
Thusday.

The second technology demonstrator (TD II) took off at 1150 hours in bright
sunshine in the presence of Defence Minister George Fernandes and LCA Project
Director Kota Harinaryana and made a perfect landing after 30 minutes, according
to HAL officials here.

"I am happy," Harinarayana said minutes after the airfract piloted by Wing
Commander T Banerjee touched down smoothly.

The test flight of the TD-II was carried out with the aircraft fitted with a new
head-up display, advanced communication system and new software, DRDO
sources said.

DRDO sources said the TD-II still powered by the advanced American G-404
engines would undertake another 12 block test flights in the present supersonic
mode.

The second technology demonstrator flight had been cleared for flight testing in
August-September last year, but was delayed due to "technical snags".

Integrating modern design concepts such as tail-less compound delta platform,
fly by wire flight control system, advanced digitial cockpit, multi-mode radar,
short take-off and landing high manoeuvrablity, advanced composite structures
and flat rate engine, the LCA is scheduled to be inducted into the IAF by 2007.
