Does anyone living in the US own a gun of any sort?? Handguns , rifles, shotguns etc ?? Do you know what the laws for gun ownership are for non citizens .. GC or H1 holders ?? Any issues with licensing ??

Please shed some light on this if you can. And please spare me the anti-gun tirades ..

Guys,

it is a serious question. I am thinking about buying a handgun for recreational use and I want to know of any potential pitfalls being a non-US citizen. Dont want to leave that decision in the hands of a gun dealer. Of course, he is going to say no problem, and he did. Just double checking, I guess.

Again, does anyone here own a gun or know of any Desi who does ??

Like I said, spare me the anti-gun tirades. I know of all that. In fact I probably wont even bring it home. Leave it in a locker at the shooting club. Thats not the point.

Smarty, AK47s are illegal for civilian possessions. I am only looking for a legally purchased and licensed gun. As for Dreamcast, I already have one - actually Nintendo. Again, not the point.

Viking,
No I am not into hunting. Its much easier to go to a grocery store. I was referring to target practice at a shooting gallery, where you shoot at paper targets. Its an olympic sport, dude.

Aryaputra,
Please refer this link ..

http://www.dictionary.com/cgi-bin/dict.pl?term=recreation

There are 2 meanings of recreation, one to re-create as you suggest, the other to play, or refresh ones mind, for which the root word is not create but a Latin word - recreatio. I think its obvious which one I was referring to.

By the way, if you want to practice shooting.... I dont think you need to buy one... You just have to join the 'shooting club' and there shud be no harm in that.

Thanks Smarty,

It is a lot cheaper to buy the gun than rent from a shooting gallery (I have asked). Guns are actually remarkably cheap starting at just about 200 bucks. Beats paying 20 bucks every time I rent. And they hold their value for resale, as long as you keep it in good condition. A lot of times, you get back more than you paid for it.

Actually, I was hoping to find someone here who has similar interests, and gun ownership. I am sure it is OK as there are a lot of Indian convenience store owners who keep guns (to protect themselves), so licensing should not be a problem. Just wanted confirmation from experience.

Okay this is from what I have heard from a American ex-colleague at another project and from some TV COP shows.

If you own a hand-gun, then the police already have a record of it. They also perform background checks when you go to get a licence.

Okay, another thing is this. Suppose there is a sshooting incident in your area and the gun used was similar or same make as you have, then the police automatically send you a notice to contact them; so that they can verify that you did not shoot in that crime.

I mean there are lot of such procedures and problems that you might face if you get a gun.

Maybe you can RENT a gun for your activities. If you are just learning to shoot at a shooting range then I am sure they must be renting a gun.

This way you will have no problems about having a gun against your name in any records.

Thanks echarcha, but I do think that buying the gun is financially more sound. I am not really learning, as I used to shoot in India as well. I just havent had the time to follow it up after coming to the US, and it is something I want to do now.

I am aware of most of what you said, just wanted to know of any problems specifically related to non-citizens owning guns. Right now I go shooting with a friend of mine and use his guns, but am probably going to wear out the welcome mat sooner or later.

Actually this is my first post here. I too was interested in owning a gun, when all the truths about owning a gun ie the gun laws came as a real bombshell.

1. No non Immigrant can own a gun, that effectively rules out all the H-1B holders.
2. All automatic weapons are banned, so AK series are a big no no.
3. You need to buy some accesories for safe keeping of the gun in your house, like a gun rack with lock and stuff like that

overall a big pain for a software engineer, so I gave up the idea.

Ideas from E-charchans welcome

Well, I was not looking for an AK 47 or any automatic gun. A semi automatic handgun suits me just fine. Yes, buying a gun safe is a great idea. Gun safes for handguns are relatively cheap - about 30 bucks.

hey smelly

why the link.....i know the link for glock.....in fact i want the new Glock 21.

U know something, when i think of a glock, i think it would be to easy to smuggle a glock through bombay customs as this gun is not gonna come up on our antique x-ray machines. no wonder the underworld out there have better firearms than our pandus.

smellyfinger

Padhu, you are correct .. all plastic parts (with metal contacts). You take it apart, store the pieces separately, no one will know.

Glocks are sweet. The Glock 21 is a lot of firepower, though. Its a .45, if I am not mistaken. Big sound, big kick. I prefer the smaller calibers in glock. If you want a .45 , get the original... the 1911. Those are cool, especially since they are all metal. The 1911 compact is not even very heavy.
