View Full Version : India heading for debt trap: Moody's

February 8th, 2002, 02:11 PM
International credit rating agency Moody's on Friday said that India was heading towards a debt trap due to the government's inability to rein in its huge public sector deficit.

"The current trend of public finances is leading inexorably to a debt trap," Moody's said in its new annual report on India.

The ongoing inability of the government to rein in its huge public-sector deficit explains the negative outlook on its Ba2 domestic debt rating, say analysts Kristin Lindow and Atsi Sheth, authors of the report.

Another reason contributing to the outlook was lack of progress on fiscal reform and "crowding out of the private sector from the credit markets."

I am no expert in economic affairs but India's problems do stem from
1. Incapable leaders.
2. Leadership that stinks.
3. Leaders that stink.

My english teacher once said that the classic world problem that was themother of all problems ....was not the rising population but the mismanagement of funds. I think Manmohan Singh rocked as a Finance Minister. Vajpayee is a good PM but his hands are tied and so he is impotent(please no wisecracks!!).
It worries me to think that we will enter a debt trap. I wish we could really turn our thinking around as well as our leadership.:(
