Police foxed, can't unravel LeT's Internet code
By Rahul Chhabra

NEW DELHI: As the Delhi Police on Thursday geared up for the big test of guarding the Republic Day celebrations, senior officials were edgy about one area which could not be combed for militants.

Despite putting their best foot forward, the gun-toting policemen were unable to set foot on a territory which is suspected to have offered a free run to the militants.

Police suspect Laskhar-e-Taiba militants, who are known for their internet skills, may have outsmarted them by setting up base on the info-highway through a cyber cafe in the city.

And what was giving the police tense moments was the fact that the militants could be busy chalking out plans for a subversive attack on Friday.

The police suspect the module of four militants, which reportedly sneaked into the Capital earlier this week, could also be relying on the Internet for plotting a strike on Friday.

But despite all their apprehensions, senior police officials could do little about countering the militants on the info-highway. ``We are feeling an urgent need for e-surveillance,'' said a senior official.

``At the moment, we cannot pin point the destination of an e-mail as most sites use US-based servers. But we are working with the VSNL to devise means of tracking down e-mails landing in or originating from countries on the western border,'' said an official.

Till late Thursday evening, the police were shadowing a number of e- mail accounts which were recovered from the hard disk of a computer used by a Lashkar militant involved in the Red Fort shootout.

Earlier this week, the police received a threatening e-mail which sent them into a tizzy. ``We have managed to locate the e-mail address of the crank mail and put it under surveillance,'' said an official of the Delhi Police cyber crime cell.

``There was nothing serious in the mail which originated from the Indian sub-continent,'' he said.

Shouldn't the Indian intelligence agencies go for a Carnivore kind of system? I think the Param range made by CDAC is certainly powerful enough for such a system but the fact that many emails go through US servers could be a problem but if they originate from India then it should be possible to intercept them...
