US warship docks at Chennai Port
Reuters
Chennai, November 5: A US warship patrolling the Arabian Sea as part of the US-led attacks on Afghanistan docked at Chennai Port on Monday, to rest its 300 sailors and officers, US consular officials said.
A public affairs official at the American Consulate in Chennai told Reuters the naval destroyer, USS O'Brien, had put into Port to enable its crew to have "much needed rest and recuperation".
"USS O'Brien, patrolling the Arabian Sea in support of Operation Enduring Freedom will visit Chennai for a few days," a US consulate statement said.
India was one of the first countries to back the United States in its war on terrorism and offer use of its facilities to US forces. Earlier on Monday, US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, on a whirlwind tour of key allies in the region, met his Indian counterpart George Fernandes in New Delhi.
He later told reporters that Defence cooperation between the two countries would be intensified in areas like training and high-level contacts. The consulate statement said the O'Brien was the first US Naval ship to dock at Chennai, on India's east coast, since 1996.
A Port official who did not wish to be identified told Reuters the ship was being provided with other "shore-based support services, including refuelling and re-supplying".
