Yesterday I happened to see an old Marathi film Sarkarnama on VHS. Our local video store has only 3Marathi tapes :(
DO you know of any stores in Bay Area which carry Marathi movies?

I vote for Bengali movies
oscar winning Satyajit Ray
Mrinal Sen
Ritwik Ghatak
and many more
whats amazing is that i found lots (around 10) Satyajit Ray's bengali movies in my local library in kentucky. i have also seen them in virginia and florida where i previously lived

Thanks... Actually on my last India trip in July of 2007, I got a load of Marathi VCDs and DVDs. I gave them to Sur Sangeet in exchange for a copy of my DVDs. So I have seen them all. Waiting for 'taaza' lot of movies.

Is anyone actually making Marathi movies? Last one I heard before leaving India was 'Maaherachi saadi' and was a daridri movie.
Due to multiplexes poppingup in all places - even tier2 cities in Maharashtra, the Marathi film industry has had a new lease of life. Earlier there were no cinema halls wiling to exhibit Marathi films as the returns from exhibiting Hindi films were much more.
As for Maherchi Saadi, it made more money than any Marathi film in the past. Infact it grossed money close to 2 crores. The movie, I agree, was a complete melodrama and sob sob cry cry story.
And yes, Marathi films are being made and exhibited too. I have seen most of the movies released last year. Bharat Jadhav and Makrand Anaspure are the new generation Ashok Saraf and Laxmikant Berde. Many of their films are a laugh riot.
