Eight badminton players booted from Olympic tournament for throwing matches

LONDON – Olympic badminton authorities booted eight players out of the games' tournament for attempting to throw matches, but the real culprits are the officials who organized the event.

Two South Korean pairs, a Chinese and an Indonesian team will be stripped of their place in the quarterfinals unless an appeal against the punishment is granted. All four teams were determined to have tried to lose their final matches in the women's doubles group stage in order to secure a more favorable draw in the knockout round.

NBC Shows Breast In Live Coverage Of Spain-USA Waterpolo Game At Olympics :smartass:

NBC might have another reason to rely on tape delay for its coverage of 2012 London Olympics.

On Wednesday, the network aired live coverage of the U.S. women's waterpolo match against Spain. As the sports announcers covering the game commented that there was "a lot of suit-grabbing going on under water," a replay of U.S. player Kami Craig grabbing her opponent's suit filled the screen.

One of the women's bare breasts was briefly exposed during the replay. Deadspin was first to notice the possible wardrobe malfunction.

Opportunity lost... :(
Vijender Singh bows out of Olympics

India’s star pugilist Vijender Singh crashed out of the middleweight category as he lost by 13-17 to Uzbekistan’s Abbos Atoev in the quarterfinal on Monday.

The Beijing Games bronze medallist wasn’t really impressive during his last eight bout against an opponent whom he had beaten 7-0 in the Asian Games final at Guangzhou two years back.

A defensive boxer by nature, Vijender stayed in his shell a tad too long giving Atoev a chance to make inroads, which proved to be decisive in the end.

Later, Mary Kom apologised for winning bronze and not a gold medal for India. "My whole country was hoping for me to win a gold medal, and I am sorry I have not come back with that," said Kom, who had to move up a weight category to fight in London.

Sushil Kumar won the silver medal in the men'd 66-kg freestyle wrestling adding six medals to India's total tally at the London Olympics. Cricketers Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehway were present to celebrate his win.

Kamla Devi, center, the mother of Indian wrestler Sushil Kumar celebrate after her son won the silver medal at the Olympic games in London, at the family home in New Delhi, India, Sunday, August 12, 2012.

Kumar's father Diwan Singh, however, lamented what he thought was a chance to win gold.

"He did not have a training partner, otherwise things might have been different," he told reporters. "There is no partnership in India. That is why we lag behind."

Meanwhile, big cash awards were announced for Kumar.

The Haryana state government announced a prize of 15 million rupees ($272,000), the New Delhi government announced 10 million rupees ($180,000) and the Indian Railways 7.5 million rupees ($136,000).

The Haryana government said it would also allot a plot of land for Kumar to develop a wrestling academy.

Final of 66Kg on 12th aug 2012.

Was dehydration behind sushil kumar's loss (http://ibnlive.in.com/news/was-dehydration-behind-sushil-kumars-loss-/281831-73.html)

Mumbai: Sushil Kumar would have made greater history had he conquered Tatsuhiro Yonemitsu in London on Sunday. But the 66-kg wrestler was up against much more than just a fiery Japanese opponent in the gold medal bout.

Moments after Sushil became the country’s first Olympic silver medal-winning wrestler and the only Indian athlete to win back-to-back Olympic medals (he won bronze at Beijing 2008), the Indian wrestling camp in London revealed ‘the other opponent’: “Minutes before the final, Sushil suffered a severe bout of loose motions. He visited the toilet five to six times and lost a lot of fluids in the process. The dehydration made him very weak and that showed in the final as the Japanese actually managed to carry Sushil — something that he has faced very rarely in a bout,” Wrestling Federation of India’s (WFI) chief coach Vinod Kumar told MiD DAY from London on Sunday.

Sushil (29) won India its sixth and final medal of the London Games when he lost 1-3 to Japan’s Tatsuhiro Yonemitsu in the summit clash at the ExCel Arena on Sunday. The Japanese won the first round 1-0 and executed a strong throw in the second to seal the fight. Moments earlier, Sushil beat Kazakhstan’s Akhzurek Tanatrov 3-1 in the semi-finals. Before that, Sushil dominantly disposed off defending champion Ramazan Sahin of Turkey and followed it up with a 3-1 win over Uzbekistan’s Ikhtiyor Naruzov.

The string of tough fights though took its toll on the Indian. “We left our rooms at 6 am to come here. Sushil had a couple of bouts in the morning followed by a short break, then the semis, then another break, and the final. He was naturally exhausted and hungry by the time the semi-final was over. So, he quickly nibbled on some vegetables and topped it up with bananas and juice. But it backfired as his stomach gave way. He was a little low before stepping into the ring for the final. So, we gave him some hot tea to sort of freshen him up,” explained WFI secretary general Raj Singh, who doubled up as team manager at the Games.

Needless to say, Sushil was not very happy with his effort. “The first words Sushil uttered to me after the final were ‘gold jeetna tha’ (I should have won gold). That’s the sort of fighter he is. But however hard one trains, one cannot fight against nature; cannot go against his own body. The gold wasn’t meant to be and unfortunately due to factors beyond the wrestling ring. The silver medal, however, does not belittle Sushil’s effort one bit. He has written a brand new chapter in Indian wrestling once again,” Raj Singh signed off.

What are you referring to? It generally losers can still qualify to move on towards the championship, unlike brackets format where losers are knocked out with one loss.

Wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt clinched the bronze medal in the men’s 60 kg freestyle category winning three rounds of repechage after losing to four-time world champion Besik Kudukhov of Russia in the pre-quarterfinals, at the ExCel Arena on Saturday.
It was a brilliant performance by Yogeshwar, who had made the quarterfinals of the last edition in Beijing. He followed Sushil Kumar in winning the Olympic bronze medal. It was the third medal from wrestling for an Indian in the Olympics as K. D. Jadhav had won it in 1952.
To win three bouts in the repechage within an hour was a tough task in itself, and the 29-year-old accomplished it with a touch of class, as he rolled the Korean semifinalist, Ri Jong Myong on the mat to win 6-0 points in the decisive third period of the bronze medal contest.
It was the Korean who had won the first period as he pushed the Indian off the mat.
In the second period, Yogeshwar won the crucial point in the first minute and held on to the advantage to force the decider. There were no points for about 40 seconds and Yogeshwar put the opponent down for the first point and just rolled him around to force the referee to stop the bout as he reached six points.
The Korean was the Asian championship bronze medallist, and not a big issue for Yogeshwar Dutt who had earlier got past the world championship silver medallist Franklin Gomez Matos of Puerto Rico in the first round of repechage by not conceding a point in the two periods. Both the times he scored the point in the ‘clinch’.
