A friend of mine is in a dilemma that I thought I will present to you. He has been in his current role of a project lead for around 3 years. The job, he says, is good. But it pays him really poor. Much less than the same job would in other companies.
He has been looking around for a job with another company and fortunately he now has an offer from another company for the same position. Even this offer is not as high as average salary for that job in the market (with a low starting figure, he cant really ask for a big hike) but atleast it increases his base.
Now, the rumblings about this are reaching his own organisation and there is quite a good chance that he will get offered a higher role in his own company if he stays back. The Higher role is going to be lead for multiple projects. He is thinking of asking for a salary match as well as the new role - but nobody knows if that will happen.
If he joins the new place, he starts off from scratch and it will probably take at least couple of years for him to move on to the next stage - but, he has a better salary and can take another jump in a year or two and get another hike.
If he stays at his current job, he will get the new role now and it will bring promotion/increment with it - but only next year. Even that does not necessarily bring his salary at par with his new job offer - if his demand for salary hike is not met.
What would you do in his place and why?

If the difference in salary is significantly high, then take the new job. If you know your skills, you will move up/higher on your skills/talent.
Sometimes ppl get too comfortable in their present positions and environment. In such case they accepts what they get to avoid moving in to newer environment.
You have to think on your own. These kind of decisions should not be taken on other's (whom you don't even know personally) opinions. What if all of them says go get the new job, and after six months or so he gets laid off or fired? We don't even know what company he is working for! and where he is planning to move ! What are the reputations of these companies??:dontknow:

ofcourse such decisions are best taken on ones own self. These are highly subjective things where one is involved. and I have said this to him myself.
However, it doesnt hurt to get an objective opinion from someone who is not involved. There could be angles that someone has not considered.
In this case, its not as much about skills as about the other things. His new offer is for same/similar work. His promotion in role and designation, if it happens, will bring some training with it - so there is an opportunity of improving skills, but its a management position more than anything....

I think if a company offers someone better role,it is going to increase the salary too.How much will that increase be,that needs to be found out.
