A great movie at last. :)
This was the kind of movie which made me want to stand up and applaud at the sheer creativity. It was a 'different' movie in every sense of the term. Yes sire, different it was. You have seen movies which move forward. This one moves backwards. You have seen movies where the suspense cracks at the end of the story. In this one the suspense unravels in the begining but since the movie runs backwards, you come to know about it in the end. YOu have seen movies where a man meets and accident and forgets his past. In this movie, the man remembers his past. But that's all he remembers.
The movie is about a guy who, owing to an incident where his wife gets raped and he gets hit on the head, develops a condition where he remembers everything till the time of the incident, but can't make any new memories thereafter. He forgets everything within 10 minutes of it happening. He forgets who he is..where he is...what was he doing. He is out to get his wife's killer but he just can't remember anything. He tattooes his whole body with facts and tips as he goes on working towards finding his wife. He takes photographs of the persons he meets with a polaroid and jots down notes on them, to know who they are and what they are about, cos it will be but 5 minutes before he forgets. This was shown in one of the scenes where a woman abuses him and curses him calling his wife a whore and him a retarded freak. At the same time she screams at him and tells him, I can call you anthing and after 10 minutes we can be the greatest of friend cos you won't remember anything.
His not being able to remember anything...not being able to produce any new memories, was shown in a number of very effective ways. He goes to the motel owner, where he was living, again and again and tells him about his condition, starting out everytime as if it were the first time he met that guy. In one of the funny sequences, in an otherwise serious movie, he is shown running on the road. After sometime he asks himself, "Why am i running?". Then he sees another guy running parrallel to him and says to himself again, "I am chasing that guy," and runs after him. The other guy takes out his gun and runs towards him. He suddenly realises, "Oh,I am being chased by that guy." :)
The movie starts at the last scene. And runs backwards. They show a scene and then they show why it happened. They show him entering a house with a bloody face, and then they show why he entered the house and what caused the blood on his face. He is shown as waking up, sitting on a toilet bowl with a liquor bottle in his hand, mumbling, "I don't feel drunk." Then they show that he was actually inside the bathroom waiting for a guy to show up, ready to bust his head with that bottle.
The screenplay and editing deserve awards. The ending of the movie, which means the begining of the story, is amazing. I won't spoil the suspense for you. The movie keeps you totally engrossed and you mind is working all the time trying to figure things out. This is the kind of movie which would definitely keep you discussing about it for at least half an hour.
So guys, if you like 'different' movies, this is a must watch. :up:
