View Full Version : Windows 8 Preview - First Look

I had this neat touchscreen all-in-one computer with Windows 7 on it. Not too old and was still familiarizing myself with Windows 7 when I read this article couple of days back that Windows 8 Preview is going to be a free download. Well... free and me a gujju... how can I miss such a chance. Went for it and downloaded it. Installed it yesterday.
First reaction: What the hell is this? What have I done? Why? Why do I do these silly things? But as I made myself more comfortable... in my opinion, it is not all bad. Yes, there are a few initial shocks. Many of my old programs went missing... gone... poyinde... chalo gayeshe... gayab. The desktop just showed colored square blocks... some with pictures and some with text. Saw a familiar one... Internet Explorer. Clicked on it... it brought up a full-screen window and a page. Stared at it for a few seconds and wanted to go back. How?
Once you click on any of those colored square blocks... you are screwed. At least that's the immediate reaction. There is no way to quit the application (app) that comes up. I tried moving it off the screen... like you do on the iPad. Nutting. Moved it up, left, right, down. Nutting. Stared at it. Right-clicked. Double-clicked. Moved the mouse around all sides and corners. Hmmm... something pops up when you move the mouse to the bottom. A menu for the specific app. But nothing to quit the app itself. Crazy.
Clicked the "Windows" button and "D" combination on the keyboard... and heaved a sigh of relief. There was the familiar old Windows 7 desktop. The new "Metro" look is only an app that shows all the colored squares and can be minimized. Once you get back the old desktop it seemed nothing has changed. Great. At least I am not walking on quicksand anymore.
Back to those missing programs. It seems the installation moved all the old programs to a Windows.Old folder. Yup, there is the old "Luxor" program. Ran it and it wanted to install itself again. Went ahead and did that and yeah, can play it again. Tried opening a PDF file and it found no application to open it. Again found the Adobe Reader folder in the Windows.Old folder, linked the PDF file to the EXE and double-clicked the PDF. Not much luck here, Reader opened and closed itself quickly. Pulled up properties and changed the mode to run in as Windows XP and we were back in business again.
Basically that's all I got to do in the few hours. One thing I could not find at all is any way to run a "Command Prompt". No "Run" option anywhere. Sad.
Pros
Everything is up there if you use the Metro
Old style still supported
Seems like a fast bootup
Cons
No "Run" option
Cannot close those Metro apps
Will have to relink all shortcuts back to old-apps
Just realized, no Flash support. So kids don't get to play all those Wizard/Roblox games.
Looks like that last con will make me go back. Question is, can I:dontknow:

Okay, I did find one way to get a command prompt but it is not easy. You got to hit F8 which then offers an advanced menu from which you can boot into the command prompt. But it goes to X: drive and not the usual C:... pata nahi kya maajla hai:(
Another irritation... saala the sleep button shuts down the computer. Need to reprogram it... but don't know how:confused:
Other than that it seems I will have to reinstall all my favourite programs and utilites... but that is expected I believe with any new installation. Still haven't found anything that will prevent me from keeping it. And maybe someday I will get used to those big colored squares (who thinks of these things:confused:).

Here (http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/features/2011/jun11/06-01corporatenews.aspx) is the Windows link of the preview
Check out the video on the above mentioned site.
This version also looks like power hungry.
• Fast launching of apps from a tile-based Start screen, which replaces the Windows Start menu with a customizable, scalable full-screen view of apps.
• Live tiles with notifications, showing always up-to-date information from your apps.
• Fluid, natural switching between running apps.
• Convenient ability to snap and resize an app to the side of the screen, so you can really multitask using the capabilities of Windows.
• Web-connected and Web-powered apps built using HTML5 and JavaScript that have access to the full power of the PC.
• Fully touch-optimized browsing, with all the power of hardware-accelerated Internet Explorer 10.

When was the last time MS gave you anything for free? Nobody gives nothing for free, certainly not billionaire uncle Gates.
You are not a monkey so why let corporations treat you like one?
Product is not intended for desktop computers ... could this be the cause of your confusion? Is it just possible that product you are trying on laptop or desktop is actually meant for company's further entry into tablets markets?

Beta versions were always free.
This win8 I have heard that this is more for the tablets though.

Beta versions were always free.
Of course they are free and for a reason too obvious to write. Premiji, did you watch Planet of the Apes? Monkeys weren't paid a cent for trying out beta version of treatments. Monkeys weren't even told that they were being used to make company billions. Just like Sanelessbhai didn't even know that This win8 is more for the tablets though.
Yes, by all means. There are software companies giving free products to home users ... there are firewalls and virus cleaners and sort of stuff. I will gladly help them experiment with my computer. I will be more than willing to help help them try to make products better. What has MS given away for free except daily downloads of shit to correct initial shit you paid for?

Here's the conclusion of CNET review..
...........
...........
Will people like it?
There's no doubt that Windows 8 is a major change for the company, and potentially a disruptive one for the market, as Microsoft aims to be the first company to successfully merge its mobile and desktop operating systems.
But will people want to use it? A lot of what Microsoft is doing with Windows 8 depends on a nearly measurable ton of factors. How soon will the operating system be ready? How will Apple and Google respond, and will their responses make it to market before Windows 8 does? I was prepared to dislike it, since I'm more impressed with the concept of Windows Phone 7 than I am with the execution of it, but anecdotal market research that Microsoft shared yesterday in the form of video testimony indicated that it could be very popular. One woman expressed disbelief that the device she was using was, in fact, Windows. She's probably not the only one.

Some people here are coming to all the wrong conclusions... and for all the wrong reasons. Badripasrad pai, thanks for your advice but ab kya gujju ban ne ka... jab khoon mein hi gujjupan hai toh kya khoon badal le poori ke poori:dontknow: Ab life mein free cheez hi sab kuch nahi hoti na... some things are free and some things are made free. Ab is ka kya matbal... will discuss in different thread.
Windows 8... been using for last 3-4 days. Have no problems... not a single crash... boots up within seconds... and the regular Windows 7 interface seems to be rock-solid. In fact the Metro interface is pretty neat too... though it is more tablet oriented (and if echans did not notice it, I have mentioned in the first few words that I have a big touchscreen PC, a huge tablet that I use vertically instead of the normal horizontal usage of a tablet). It has a few games and the kids enjoy playing those. They have also been able to get their old games all up and running... so nobody is missing anything.
Have to try networking and all... will do that one of these days. But in short, I will give Windows 8 a
