Kozhikode, February 10: Preliminary work to build what is billed as India's biggest mosque has begun here, thanks to the initiative of the charitable institution Jamia Markazu Ssaquafathi Ssunniyya headed by Muslim scholar Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobaker Musliyar.
Musliyar heads the popular social, charity and educational organisation based here which has in the past three decades educated more than 30,000 students from various states in the country.
Two years back, Markazu hit the headlines when more than 100 children from Kashmir were enrolled here for their basic education.
Speaking to IANS, Musliyar said the plans for the mega project were in their initial stages.
'See, these things are just being planned and raising money is the issue here. At this moment, I do not wish to come out with the estimates and other details. At the appropriate time, I will reveal all the details. Right now, I do not wish to say when the project will start or when it would be completed,' said Musliyar.
A source close to Musliyar, however, added that the land for the proposed mosque is being identified and a few locations in the outskirts of the city have been chosen.
At present, Delhi's Jama Masjid, commissioned by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan and completed in 1656, is India's largest mosque.

Haram means sanctuary.
Well... sanctuary means resting place (security induces rest) and hamara Chachaji ne kaha tha haram haraam hai. So, why is this place called haraam:confused:

Woh tou tumhare chachaji ney kaha tha na. It doesn't matter to them what a kafir's chacha says.
A musalmnan chacha always meant sanctuary as holy place. :D

Thanks Doc for pointing it out... Balushahi pai ab arabic-roman ka khel mat khelo... It's the same place... no need to be ashamed of it... with four wives, a tribe of goats and a train of camels, who'd get the time for praying. :D
haram |ˈhe(ə)rəm; ˈharəm|
adjective
forbidden or proscribed by Islamic law.
ORIGIN from Arabic ḥarām ‘forbidden.’
harem |ˈhe(ə)rəm; ˈhar-|
noun
1 the separate part of a Muslim household reserved for wives, concubines, and female servants.
2 the wives (or concubines) of a polygamous man.
• a group of female animals sharing a single mate.
ORIGIN mid 17th cent. (sense 1) : from Arabic ḥaram, ḥarīm, literally ‘prohibited, prohibited place’ (hence ‘sanctuary, women's quarters, women’ ), from ḥarama ‘be prohibited.

Doc, arabic is devoid of word plays where the god (or god-likes) says ashwastama mara gaya and then shows you middle finger and says what I meant was an elephant. :smartass:
Haram, harem and haraam are three different words pronounced uniquely in arabic. English might have limitation to express those pronunciations; and at various places (where English is used) you might find word haram and harem used interchangeably but derive the meaning with its context.
Chitrala, may be its the prayers which bring the blessing of having many wives and owning concubines, goats and camels. :D

Thanks for the meaning and etymology, brother. You do own a good dictionary.
I think Arbaaz Balasaheb Pai is now going to quibble on semantics and transliteration and such ... the truth about the believers, who insist on a literal interpretation of some tome written 1300 years back, is too bitter to bear. :D
