View Full Version : New homeowner woes

Little did we realize when we excitedly moved into our new home, the hardwork that goes along with homeownership.
Not even taking the recent water disaster that we had to go through.... theres not a moment when u dont have to do something laborious or expensive with the home. The first year constituted the following buys-
-Lawn tractor
-Snowblower
-Leaf blower
In addition the heating bills are so freaking high, that you wonder if you should just consider having ur coat on at all times, mittens, boots et al , so u dont have to heat as much!
Each snowstorm brings additional work w.r.t pushing the heavy snowthrower around, which pretty much comes close to dislocating your shoulder joints. The shovelling is no fun either.
And to think we used to whimper about cleaning our cars, while in apartments. Compared to the huge driveway to clear, 2 cars seem like piece of cake now....

As the final icing to the cake, the oil company just said that they won't fill oil if there is no clear path, so now, we ought to shovel a clear path through the lawn for the oil guys to fill oil. Sucky sucky home ownership.
There is always some major expense or labor. so freaking tired ! sigh :( :(

guess what.. the previous home I was living in, I had a professional snow cleaning contract in effect for each day snow removal in case of snow, no matter how bad the roads are and my home was the cleanest in the neighbourhood. last year wasnt bad in snow so cleaned it ourselves and summer we thought if we ll have more snow then we ll give contract to someone. this winter when I contacted those guys .... here the snow removal rates are more than double. and all the wider snow blowers with high power are on backorder.:mad:

Still keeping the driveway cleaner than those contract guys but havent been to gym and swimming pool in months and still losing all the Xmas, new year weight. :smartass:

snow snow ...go away...

We were thinking of buying a house, specifically a condo, rather than a standalone house. Not sure whether the condo owners are going through the same misery ...

anyone can comment?

This one is for 4 cars and fifth you can park horizontal.

the snow throwing earlier was okay when the pile was low now pile is more than 4 feet high on both sides. :o

condo is the best to buy for the places where it snows a lot.

enclosed space, no snow removal, inhouse-gardening, no watering frontyard/backyard, still enjoy the summer on the patio with BBQ, all maintanance included in the condo fee.

best option untill kids starts activities and they need more space in winters to play.

P.S. I ll suggest to rent a condo before you buy cos selling a condo can be pain.

I hear ya! And I am dreading going home tonight (even though we have a very small driveway); the snowplow would have dumped a big dump!

Parking other 4 cars vertically must be lot more difficult then blowing 4 feet high snow pile, I suppose?:dontknow:

:D

Sorry for the derailment Dolly.:)

Clearing 2-3 inches is no problem for me. Anything more and there is a high school kid who comes and does a very good job of clearing the snow from driveway and sidewalks. Only $15. Yesterday he got a buddy along and they were done in half an hour. Try to find kids like these in your neighborhood.

First congratulations Doly on your new home.

Yes homeownership comes with lots of differant problems.

1. Water woes - Remember insurance companies hate flooding and water problem . Once you file a claim , you should not file claim for next two years atleast otherwise they will drop you and you will not ge insurance again. I face the rpoblem, where I called my insurance company a couple of times for suspected water leak. Although, there was no leak , they put it on my record and dropped me next year...... So use insurance wisely.
2. Snow - That why I dont live on east coast
3. Cost - YEs
4. Work - Yes
5. Worht it ? - You will enjoy the house in summer.

Especially among desis owning a house is a big deal  , you then move in differant circle .....

Check you windows if they are properly sealed. No matter how cold it is outside, you should still be able to heat up the room just fine.

This house is badly insulated, Rakhi Tai... Maintenance people came to fix windows before winter started... to make matters worse, rooms are on north side(blame canada:D)... a small room heater might help... not sure if there is need to spend on that. I miss our last house...it was a very old apartment but very well insulated.

call the maintenance guys again if you are paying the heat bills urself, if it is included in rent then crank up the heat to 94 what the heck ... atleast it ll be 82 even near windows.

Thanks , we moved in summer, was paradise then. nows payback.
seriously, summer can't come soon enuff. sick and tired of the work.
w.r.t insurance, water damage claim is something we didnt plan on, but ab sar pe museebat hai to insurance to call karna hi padega na, if it was a paltry sum, we wld have taken care of it ourselves.
I hope the problem never recurs.

goggles - check
Thinsulate waterproof ski gloves - check ( very important )
snow boots - check
make sure you dont eat much before ... ask somebody to make tomato soup for you with lots of black peppers in it for after the exercise. ( you ll need it )
take ur time to shovel the snow ( dont do it fast ... you ll get tired sooner than you think )
dont scrap the wood on the patio floor... I know you are mad but be gentle on the wood ... its mother nature who gaves you her love in the form of snow. floor is innocent.

tell us tomorrow how it was .... I know tonight you wont give 2 hoots for any site or any friends cos you just want to sleep with two 500mg Tylenols. ( Nyquil shot might work wonders but hey I m no expert at those stuff )

Ohhhhh  you were going to some business meeting in winter or what... this is a labourer's job so leave that expensive stuff in the closet and get to the basics....... thats why you have to ask before you gear up for the big jobs... thats why we are here ... ;) :D

they are available at any sports goods shop... ask for ski gloves... thinsulates are better, other brand I tried is Land's End.

Don't even think about paying that much.

I can do it cheaper including plane tickets to CT.:D

You and your husband can do it too. All you have to do is buy the insulation from hardware store and do it yourself. Its a day or two job at the most for non-experienced ones. Once you will do little area, you will get idea.

Hire a contractor ONLY if your attic is very low in height and large area to cover.

Cheapest way to do is buy the blowing one, Home depot used to lend the insulation blower free for a day if you buy 10 or more bundles. Rent their truck and bring the stuff home.

Google for more.;)

Do the lay down thing. I've done it before. Its pretty easy, you just have to watch out for nails sticking out from the roof.

4K for insulation  ..contractors are expensive in CT.

Have you tried contacting handymen instead? Usually will be less than 1/2 the price. Don't go for contractors for every little thing.

When you work on a project with a team or with a student body or similar association... and you never pick on any individual for something or talk in first person singular in your mails or meetings... no one tells you these things but you've to notice such things in other mails.

dollyG, you are right ... the way you have put it couldnt have been better ... wifey says lets first move to condo and then later to a house?

anyways, my GC is not through ... should be done soon ... I am thinking of changing jobs by the end of this year or may be mid of next year ... wifey too searching for jobs ... So when the dust settles, I will put the bricks in for the house ...

To think about the girl you love
and hold her tight....
So happy together.... :D

Goodness, this song is stuck in my head. :D

And you say you belong to me.....
and ease my mind....
Imagine how the world could be,
so very fine.....
So happy together....

latest update. i asked around about attic insulation and looks like putting it up is piece of cake. The only concern i have is about the masterbedroom above the garage, its probably just sheet rock with some framing , and not sturdy to stand on. wonder how i'll get to that part. i will take some pics and take up this project in spring....

I dont know how to calculate what R-level i am currently at. it seems R-49 is the suggested insulation level in the attic.

R-19 is what i see in home depot.

hehehe ... dolly's experiences reminds me of this old piece .. just replace Mass with CT.

:D :D

Subject: I Love Massachusetts

August 15 - Moved to our new home in Massachusetts. It's so beautiful here.
The lake to the north looks so majestic. I can hardly wait to see it snow
covered. I'm going to love it here!

October 14 - Massachusetts is definitely the most beautiful place on earth.
The leaves have turned all the colors and shades of red and orange. Went
for a ride through the park and saw some deer. They are so graceful.
Certainly they are the most wonderful animals on earth. This must be
paradise, I LOVE IT HERE!!

November 10 - Deer season will start soon. I can't imagine anyone wanting to
kill such a gorgeous animal. Hope it will snow soon. I love it here. Those
red and orange leaves have covered my yard. Looks like a magnificent
multi-colored carpet. HOW BEAUTIFUL. Raking and cleaning up the yard will
be an opportunity for invigorating exercise in the cool crisp air.

November 15 - Ah, more leaves and more exercise.

November 18 - Jesus, still more leaves. Guess it's best to wait until
they've all fallen before I rake again.

November 25 - Finally, all of the trees lost their leaves and with today's
final raking it's over for this season.
Chiropractor suggested I use a lawn maintenance service next year. Only four
blisters became infected. Should probably remember to use gloves.

November 30 - What the Heck? Where did all of those leaves come from? Had a
little wind last night and the lawn is covered again. Oh well, they'll just
have to wait until spring.

December 12 - It snowed last night, FINALLY. Woke up to find everything
blanketed in white. It looks like a postcard. We went outside and cleaned
the snow off the steps and shoveled the driveway. Had a snowball fight (I
won) and when the snowplow came by and we had to shovel the end of the
driveway again. What a beautiful place. I Love Massachusetts!

December 14 - More snow last night, I love it. The snow plow did his trick
to the driveway again. I Love it here.

December 19 - More snow again last night. Can't get out of the driveway.
Can't to get to work. I'm exhausted from shoveling. Damn snowplow.

December 22 - More of that white shit fell again last night. As if dealing
with the leaves weren't bad enough, now I've got blisters all over my hands
from shoveling, must remember to wear gloves. I think the snowplow hides
around the corner and waits until I'm finished shoveling the driveway. What a Jerk?

December 25 - Merry Christmas. More frigging snow. If I ever get my
hands on that son-of-a-bitch who drives the snowplow, I swear I'll kill the
bastard. Don't know why they don't use more salt on the roads to melt the
ice.

December 27 - More white shit last night. Have been inside for three days
except for shoveling out the driveway after that plow goes through every
time. My gloves got wet and then froze on my hands.
Doctor said it was just a mild case of frost bite, disfiguration is probably
only temporary. Can't go anywhere, car is stuck in a mountain of white shit.
The weatherman says to expect another 10 inches of the shit tonight. Do you
know how many shovels full of snow 10 inches is?

December 28 - The stupid weatherman was wrong. We got 34 inches of that
white shit. At this rate it won't melt 'till summer.
The plow got stuck up the road and the bastard came to the door and asked to
borrow a shovel. After I told him I'd already broken six of them shoveling
all the shit he pushed into the driveway, I broke my last one on his head.

January 4 - Finally got out of the house today. Went to the store to get
food and on the way back I hit a damned deer that ran in front of my car.
Did about $3000 damage. These beast should be killed. Wish the hunters
had killed them all last November.

May 3 - Took the car to the garage in town. The thing is rusting out from
all the salt they put all over the roads.

May 10 - Moved to Arizona. I can't imagine why anyone in their right mind
would ever live in that God forsaken state of Massachusetts.

well from what i hear , its not impossible to solve if caught early. it takes 7-14 days for taking care of an active problem. But u need to find and seal the entry point. Im gonna give it a shot on the inside. because the outside has 4 feet snow all around.

So I asked around and here's what I did, bought Better mouse trap 16000 (Intruder) its the best one out there as per my collegue....cleaned out under the sink. Took a flash light checked for any openings that mice could get through. The main water pipe was surrounded by a gap which i sealed with duct tape and i also sealed the gap surrounding the sub let to dishwasher. Then i set up 4 traps at different spots. This morning there was a mouse in the trap that was like a foot from the kitchen sink closet.
the others got nothing. My husband, who had no role to play in the research or buying the trap or figuring out taping the holes, stepped up to dispose off the trophy as i looked the other way. (did i tell u im a bugo-nonpet-non-human-livo-phobiac) So Then i checked, there is a gap between the dishwasher and the sink cabinet, maybe it was hiding there.
Nevertheless. As per the storekeepers suggestion im gonna set traps until i go seven days without catching one.

Yuck.

If these gaps, you are talking about are between "pipe and wall", then do not use duct tape. Go back to hardware store and buy a foam spray insulation. and spray in the gaps.

actually between pipe and cabinet wood ...i can upload the pic i took prior to taping ....
after taping i set the trap, and the trap did get a mouse, so im wondering if it was hiding in the gap between the sink cabinet and the adjacent dishwasher?
not sure.
i will check out the foam spray insulation during the weekend.
