Probably a virus scan. Lots of places schedule virus scans for mid-day Monday. Or you have a bad hard drive. :D

dirty, did you run spyware scanners ... check with TaskBar which process is hogging memory and/or CPU ... Run SuperAntiSpyware and MalawareBytes ... if you detect anything, run other scanners as well ... Also check to see if your virtual memory is good enough and is not mapped to C drive (which might already be defragmented) ... try mapping to another partition ...

My IT guy screwed up in a big way. My XP desktop machine at work got spywared such that it hogged the CPU, did not allow any anti-virus/spyware to run, disable the taskbar such that I cant kill any process ... hard rebooted the PC and found that it does not allow me to login. I type my password, and it goes into the windows login process, and then after sometime logs me out ...

At boot time, I was able to get some of my most critical research files ... and I had asked the IT person to do it similarly for all the files. He screwed up ... He got overwhelmed with this autologoff behavior of the spyware ... saved some documents but not all ... formatted the drive and installed brand new and then copied over the some set of backed up files without running antivirus/spyware check on it ...

After 3 days, I got attacked again with the same shit ... This time I handled it myself ... Even partitioned my drive into 3 partitions and also setup linux dual boot on it ...

Before you blame your poor IT guy - ask yourself this. How did the spyware/virus get on to your WORK machine? Could it be that you were visiting a site or reading an email for a non-work related purpose? Think....

why cant you setup linux on it by yourself ... yes some code management software may not be available to be installed on linux .. but most of the work can be done by commands on the linux/servers that hosts the codebase ...

Does your hp laptop have an nvidia geforce 8000 series video chipset? If so, you are close to screwed! My laptop bit the dust last nov because manufacturer defect with nvidia video card (it overheats and gets burnt). HP refused to cover it (warranty expired) despite the fact that other models of HP laptop with same video cards have been recalled and fixed for free. HP SUCKS!

There is an addon called "Web of Trust" for FireFox. It mentions the trustworthiness and reliability of a website link before you click and even if you click it warns the user of the poor reputation . Try it and please dont hesitate to rate yourself .

Superantispyware found nothing. Malwarebyte's Antimalware did nothing. $49 (special discounted) spyware and virus cleaner took the money for nothing.

Free software I downloaded found over 33 of all sort of crap and left my laptop as clean as (edited). Let me know if you interested?

Serious yaar, PC taking a long time to boot, hard disk working continuously etc.. are regular symptoms of hard disk failure/ malfunction. I have a lot of experience with this. So, if you have any critical data, do take a backup.

Try Test Disk...http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk

I had similar problem, The hard disk was getting detected at bios level but after loading OS it was not getting detected. Its partition table was corrupted. I was able to restore it back with TestDisk without any data loss...

Yaar its like....I have tested in 4 different laptops...not getting detected anywhere...it powers up...but no disk activity...in confusion and trauma...I din't notice if drive was spinning (no tick-tick sound though)....it had a fall and casing did open up a lil but I dunno how much damage it did...don't think a fall would make difference to partition table (I mean just a guess)..I checked it in device manager/when you eject a USB drive...drive is getting detected (model-serial number)...but not getting detected in 'my computer' anywhere (XP/VISTA)....I bought it from US (western digital)...I dont think they will even cover it in warranty here  ...actually I am not concerned about replacement/repair...but my data

MacAfee has fu(ked with my worklaptop too! There is no way anything could have got into my work laptop. the number of restrictions is so many, that there is very little that is allowed through. I had to get disk restored. fortunately my company has an effective backup solution which can and does restore data from only as less as 4 hours ago. My conclusion was that one of the MacAfee update was screwed and does not bear well with all machines...

What a coincidence..My laptop also got attacked - anti virus software updated itself and after that laptop cannot start up fully.Have given it to support guyz yesterday - apparently they have got a long queue. So I cannot do anything at all apart from roaming around inside and outside office.

the most probably cause is that the disk has disconnected from the USB circuit board. Happened with my disk. I opened the casing, remove the hard disk from the PCB, re-attached it. put it back into casing, put the screws etc back and it should work ok.
Portable hard disks casings absorb shocks most times, unless the fall is bad enough to detach a piece of something inside, the disk is usable. chances of scratching are remote too.

if you search on youtube, you will even get videos telling you how to remove hard disks from the casing. WD ones are a bitch in this matter. they dont have screws...

You may not believe but its there.. most family pics online on picasa (prints in India home).. some files, resume' versions and templates in 8GB flash drive and some zipped into emails.. for music i cant keep more than 2 backups.. some of it in iPod.. rest of the data can go to trash. :D

I talked with WD guys....they say...you can get your HD checked by a 3rd party and recover your data and then send us for replacement....lemme go to this 3rd party...ask them to open it and then I will try to follow your guidelines and try to extract data...I hope this 3rd party won't screw the idea because they take lotsa money to recover data and if I dont get it done from them...WD won't honor warranty stuff..letz see..

thank you guys for the help. Repps coming :)
